Description
Regal Bryan appears as a central character in the original game, its sequel, and animated adaptations. Originally known as Duke Bryant, he presided over the Lezareno Company until his romance with Alicia Combatir was thwarted by class barriers and his assistant George. George arranged Alicia's transfer to Exsphere broker Vharley for the Angelus Project. To reclaim her, Regal traded the Toize Valley Mine, only to discover her monstrous transformation from a defective Exsphere. Fulfilling Alicia's plea to end her suffering, he killed her, resulting in his murder conviction. Imprisoned, he accepted a deal from the Pope of Tethe'alla: capture Colette Brunel in exchange for Vharley's arrest, positioning him against the main party.

As a perpetual reminder of guilt and an oath never to kill with his hands, Regal wears self-imposed handcuffs. He developed a leg-focused fighting style using greaves for enhanced kicks, refined with advice from a fellow inmate. This Traubel style employs arte chains for anti-air and aerial combat, supplemented by limited chi magic like healing artes. He deliberately abandoned his far more potent hand-based combat.

Regal first confronts the party in Meltokio Sewers, threatening Zelos Wilder to capture Colette. Later, in Gaoracchia Forest, he seeks Presea Combatir, Alicia’s sister. Seeing Presea’s Exsphere, he tries violently to remove it, sparking a battle. Defeated and unconscious, he is taken to Mizuho. Under Zelos’s conditions to stay near Presea, he travels with the group, sharing extensive Tethe'allan cultural knowledge. His identity as Duke Bryant emerges in Altamira when he saves George from Vharley. Confronted by Presea at Alicia’s grave, Regal and Alicia’s spirit recount the tragedy; Presea states she cannot forgive him but won’t treat him as an enemy. He fully joins the party to pursue Vharley and atone.

His development depends on party bonds. If closest to Lloyd Irving by the conclusion, Regal is briefly possessed by Mithos but rescued, later aiding Lloyd in Exsphere collection. Otherwise, he and Presea nearly battle an illusion of Alicia in a cell until Lloyd intervenes, prompting Regal to accept his past and support Lloyd.

Two years later in the sequel, Regal is imprisoned in Izoold under false arson charges after rescuing gel salesman Berg from a fire caused by a Light Frog or Nazdrovie. The party secures evidence proving his innocence, freeing him. If chosen in a key scene, Lloyd references their two-year journey and expresses intent to travel with him again.

Despite his convict appearance, Regal maintains a quiet, polite, sincere, calm, and gentlemanly demeanor. He possesses deep historical and cultural expertise. His hobby is cooking—ranked second-best in the party—and he carries his kitchen knife. After resolving the Alicia tragedy and broader exoneration, he removes his handcuffs but continues fighting solely with his legs, honoring his oath.

He also features in the *Tales of the Rays* event "Overseer Rescue Plan - What was Sworn upon These Hands," confirming his inclusion in spin-off narratives.
