Choso, the eldest of nine Death Painting Wombs, is a half-human, half-cursed spirit hybrid created over 150 years ago. His origin stems from experiments by the sorcerer Noritoshi Kamo, later revealed as the ancient sorcerer Kenjaku inhabiting Kamo's body. Kenjaku mixed his blood with a uniquely constituted woman capable of birthing cursed spirit-human hybrids, resulting in Choso and his siblings being sealed as cursed objects shortly after birth until their modern-era incarnation.
His human-like form, visible even to non-sorcerers, features long dark hair typically tied in two high ponytails, a distinctive blood-red mark across his nose and cheeks, and violet eyeshadow in animated adaptations. He commonly wears a light tan robe beneath a purple vest-like gi, a matching scarf, and brown boots. This facial mark bleeds to fuel his cursed techniques and alters shape during combat, especially when employing abilities like Flowing Red Scale.
Initially calm and reserved, Choso displays apathy toward humans and sorcerers but harbors intense devotion to his family, viewing himself primarily as an elder brother responsible for guiding and protecting his siblings. After brothers Eso and Kechizu (Death Paintings No. 2 and 3) are killed by Yuji Itadori and Nobara Kugisaki, Choso joins Kenjaku and Mahito's group during the Shibuya Incident to avenge them. He participates minimally in the plot to seal Satoru Gojo, focusing instead on tracking Yuji.
During his battle with Yuji, Choso gains the upper hand but halts his final attack upon experiencing a false memory of Yuji dining peacefully with Eso and Kechizu. This vision, potentially triggered by his innate ability to sense familial bonds through blood, convinces him Yuji is his half-brother—a connection later supported by Kenjaku's involvement in both their creations (Kenjaku possessed Yuji's mother, Kaori Itadori). Choso immediately shifts allegiance, protecting Yuji and confronting Kenjaku as the true enemy who manipulated their family. This bond leads him to forgive Yuji for his brothers' deaths, viewing them as misunderstandings rather than malice.
He wields the Kamo Clan's inherited Blood Manipulation technique at a level surpassing modern practitioners. Key techniques include Convergence (compressing blood to empower attacks), Piercing Blood (firing high-velocity blood projectiles), Supernova (explosive wide-range blood orbs), Flowing Red Scale (enhancing physical capabilities via blood flow manipulation), and Blood Meteorite (hardening blood into ballistic projectiles). His blood is poisonous and drains opponents' stamina. Weaknesses include water dilution of his techniques and thrombosis risks from prolonged blood hardening. Ranked Special Grade, he demonstrates tactical intelligence and endurance, defeating Yuji Itadori and Naoya Zenin and later serving as a guard for Master Tengen during the Culling Game arc.
Choso's development centers on reconciling his hybrid identity. He regrets forcing Eso and Kechizu to "live as curses," believing it cost them a future alongside Yuji. Sorcerer Yuki Tsukumo advises him to "die as a curse to live as a human," profoundly influencing his self-perception. He honors her after her death by sharing her research with Yuji. His hatred for Kenjaku culminates in a failed patricide attempt, channeling his brothers' spirits for strength. Choso is ultimately killed by Sukuna.
