Kanzo Mogi is a dedicated and reserved member of the Japanese Task Force investigating Kira. A tall, broad man with short, spiky black hair, he is typically dressed in a formal suit and tie. Mogi rarely speaks, even in agreement, but demonstrates exceptional acting skills when required, such as posing as an enthusiastic manager for Misa Amane during the Yotsuba Group infiltration. He initially serves as a field agent, investigating the Kitamura family under L's orders and posing as L himself, later proving an invaluable asset in intelligence gathering. During the Yotsuba case, he takes over as Misa Amane's manager after Touta Matsuda's faked death, aiding the Task Force's infiltration efforts. Following Soichiro Yagami's death, Mello manipulates Mogi into traveling to New York, where he is captured and interrogated by Near and the SPK. Due to Light Yagami's prior preparations, Mogi remains completely silent under pressure. After an attack on the SPK by Kira followers, Near falsely declares Mogi dead to provoke a reaction from the Task Force, leading Shuichi Aizawa to share critical information. Once Mogi is confirmed alive, Aizawa strengthens his suspicion of Light and involves Mogi in monitoring Misa Amane. Mogi supports Aizawa's plan to investigate Light, including overseeing Misa's activities. Near later takes both Misa and Mogi into custody before the Yellow Box Warehouse showdown, where Mogi is present during Light's exposure as Kira. In the live-action film series, Mogi is killed by Misa Amane early in the second film. In the musical adaptation, Mogi is a Task Force member who chooses to stay on the case despite risks and references having a daughter; Light Yagami writes Mogi's name in the Death Note, forcing him to commit suicide by stepping in front of a bus, which leads L and Soichiro Yagami to suspect Light. In the television drama, his role is expanded; he is portrayed as a former family friend and partner of Soichiro Yagami in the police force, though they drifted apart over time. Takeshi Obata, the character designer, noted that Mogi's design became incoherent as he was not initially planned to be a main character and unexpectedly lasted through the entire series. It is suggested that if Mogi became the NPA chief, he would lean toward L's side, with Near as L.
