Kanzou Mogi is a dedicated member of the Japanese Task Force investigating Kira, known for his extremely reserved demeanor and rare speech. He presents as a tall, broad-shouldered man with short black hair, typically dressed in formal attire. His skills include effective intelligence gathering and acting, notably demonstrated when he seamlessly adopts an enthusiastic persona to pose as Misa Amane's manager during the Yotsuba Group infiltration.
Originally a field agent, Mogi conducts early investigations such as probing the Kitamura family under L's orders while posing as L. His role expands after the Task Force relocates to new headquarters, where L acknowledges his value in intelligence operations. During the Yotsuba case, he replaces Touta Matsuda as Misa Amane's manager following Matsuda's faked death.
Following Soichiro Yagami's death, Mello manipulates Mogi into traveling to New York, ostensibly to draw out Light Yagami, but redirects him to SPK headquarters. Near subjects him to intense interrogation about the Kira case; due to Light's prior preparations, Mogi remains completely silent despite sustained pressure. After escaping an attack by Kira supporters alongside the SPK, Near falsely reports Mogi's death to provoke Shuichi Aizawa into sharing critical Task Force information. Mogi later supports Aizawa's investigation into Light by monitoring Misa and remains with her until Near takes both into custody before the Yellow Box Warehouse confrontation, which he attends.
Alternate media portrayals diverge significantly. The live-action film *Death Note 2: The Last Name* depicts his early death when Misa Amane kills him using her Shinigami Eyes during a televised event. The *Death Note* musical introduces an original element where Mogi references having a daughter during "Change the World Reprise" when deciding to remain on the Task Force; Light later discovers Mogi is surveilling him, writes his name in the Death Note, and forces him to die by suicide via bus collision. This event contributes to L suspecting Light's collaboration with the second Kira and Soichiro recognizing Light as Kira. The television drama adaptation establishes him as a former family friend of the Yagamis and partner to Soichiro Yagami in the police force before drifting apart.
Character designer Takeshi Obata noted that Mogi's design became incoherent because he was not initially planned as a main character and was not expected to persist throughout the entire series.
