Description
Momo Belia Deviluke is the third princess of the planet Deviluke and the youngest daughter of King Gid and Queen Sephie. She is the younger sister of Lala Satalin Deviluke and the fraternal twin of Nana Astar Deviluke. Originally introduced as a recurring character in the series To Love-Ru, she becomes one of the primary protagonists in its sequel To Love-Ru Darkness. Momo is physically distinguished by her short pink hair and purple eyes, and like all members of the Deviluke royal family, she possesses a tail, which is notably sensitive and can weaken her upon being touched.
Momo's outward demeanor is gentle, graceful, and friendly, often appearing sweet and easygoing. This surface personality, however, masks a deeply calculating and mischievous side. She is highly intelligent, though not to the same level as her sister Lala, and demonstrates a mature mentality in certain matters, particularly regarding romance and physical intimacy. When angered, she can become terrifying and sadistic, a stark contrast to her usual warmth. She is also known to display manipulative tendencies and is an accomplished actress, capable of deceiving those around her when necessary.
Her primary motivation in To Love-Ru Darkness is her deep romantic affection for Rito Yuki, the protagonist. Unwilling to create conflict between her sister Lala, who is Rito's fiancée, and Rito's other love interest Haruna, Momo devises what is known as the Harem Plan. This plan is designed to allow Rito to marry multiple girls, essentially building a harem, with the justification that if Rito becomes the next King of Deviluke, the laws of Earth would not apply to him. Momo takes it upon herself to orchestrate romantic situations between Rito and various girls, hoping to nurture their relationships while also securing a place for herself among them. She constantly monitors Rito, sometimes sneaking into his bed at night and often fantasizing about intimate scenarios with him. Despite her proactive scheming, she also expresses contentment with simply being a lover rather than a primary partner.
In terms of her role in the story, Momo drives much of the romantic and comedic plot in To Love-Ru Darkness. Her Harem Plan serves as a central narrative device, influencing the interactions between Rito and the many female characters surrounding him. She enrolls as a student at Sainan High to be closer to Rito and the other girls, using her intellect and knowledge of relationships to manipulate circumstances. Throughout the series, she exhibits moments of vulnerability, particularly when her own feelings conflict with her goals, such as experiencing jealousy or unease when Rito shows affection to others. Her character development includes grappling with whether she would truly be satisfied with sharing Rito, a doubt that surfaces during key emotional moments.
Key relationships define Momo's character. She shares a close bond with her twin sister Nana, though the two frequently argue and compete for attention, especially regarding Rito. She looks up to her older sister Lala, both as a sibling and as an inventor, and she respects the familial connection despite her own romantic involvement with Lala's fiancé. Her relationship with Rito is the emotional core of her arc; she is deeply affectionate toward him, often taking care of household chores for him and expressing her love openly while also navigating the complexities of the harem dynamic. She also interacts with other characters such as Yui Kotegawa, Golden Darkness, and Mikan Yuki, often viewing them through the lens of her Harem Plan.
Momo possesses a unique supernatural ability to communicate with and command plant life, both terrestrial and extraterrestrial. She is an expert in extraterrestrial botany, having traveled the galaxy and befriended many alien plants. This ability is channeled through a special device called a D-Dial, given to her by her sister Lala, which allows her to summon and control plants as she wishes. Unlike her sister Lala's technological inventions, Momo's power is botanical and serves both practical and tactical purposes, though she prefers psychological and social strategies over direct physical confrontation. Her tail is also capable of discharging lightning, adding another layer to her abilities.
