TV Special
Description
Mayoi Hachikuji is the ghost of a fifth-grade elementary school girl who died in a traffic accident ten years before the events of the series while attempting to reach her mother's home. She appears as a young girl with long black hair styled into pigtails, dark red eyes, and a white headband decorated with swirl patterns. She wears an elementary school uniform consisting of a white blouse with straps attached to a dark blue skirt, white socks, and pink shoes. Her most distinctive accessory is a large pink backpack shaped like a chick, which she carries at all times and which symbolically represents a snail's shell, a visual motif tied to her nature as an oddity known as the Lost Snail. Mayoi is cheerful, energetic, and inquisitive, characteristics typical of a child her age. She frequently makes spelling mistakes and deliberately mispronounces Koyomi Araragi's surname, a playful habit she later admits is intentional. Despite her bright demeanor, she does not easily trust strangers and will push back against anyone who becomes too intrusive. This guardedness is partly a protective measure to prevent others from becoming lost under her influence. She can also display unexpected maturity, particularly when offering advice or listening to the personal struggles of those around her. Her core motivation stems from her unresolved desire to find her mother's home, a journey that was cut short by her death. As an earthbound spirit, she wandered the streets for a decade, unintentionally causing people who did not want to go home to become lost. After Koyomi Araragi and Hitagi Senjougahara help her reach her destination, she transforms from an earthbound spirit into a wandering spirit, granting her the freedom to go wherever she wishes. This shift is a significant turning point, as she gains a sense of closure while also accepting her continued existence as a wanderer. Throughout the series, she appears in multiple arcs, including Mayoi Snail, Mayoi Jiangshi, and Shinobu Time. In Shinobu Time, her existence is threatened by the darkness, a manifestation of the natural order that targets oddities that have strayed from their intended role. With the guidance of Izuko Gaen, Mayoi ultimately chooses to pass on to the afterlife to stop the darkness, kissing Koyomi and confessing her love for him before vanishing. Later, she is resurrected by Koyomi during a journey to hell and ascends to become a goddess enshrined at the North Shirahebi Shrine, taking on an adult form dressed in shrine maiden attire. Her notable abilities are tied to her nature as an oddity. As the Lost Snail, she can only be seen by those who subconsciously do not wish to return home, and she causes people around her to lose their way. After becoming a wandering spirit, this influence is lessened, and she gains greater freedom of movement. As a goddess, she exhibits a newfound confidence and fearlessness, even when confronted by powerful beings. Her key relationships include a deep bond with Koyomi Araragi, who is the first person to genuinely help her and with whom she shares a warm, teasing, and emotionally significant connection. She also interacts with Hitagi Senjougahara, who initially views her with suspicion but later shows empathy and aids in her journey. Her family background includes her parents' divorce, after which she lived with her father; her original family name was Tsunade before the divorce. The name Hachikuji, which literally means eighty-nine temples, carries thematic weight, as it plays on concepts of misfortune and being out of place, while her given name, Mayoi, can be interpreted as the word for losing one's way.
