Description
Gaoh, sometimes called Gao, is a one-eyed, one-armed figure shaped by cycles of violence, remorse, and rebirth. Born with a missing eye and arm, he endured relentless scorn from peers, fueling bitterness that drove him to banditry. In a robbery fueled by envy, he assaulted sculptor Akanemaru, severing his arm and stealing his tools—a crime that mirrored his own physical anguish.

His rage bled into his marriage to Hayame, a woman who believed in his latent goodness. He killed her in a trivial quarrel, an act that shattered his hardened exterior when her death revealed her identity as a benevolent spirit tied to a ladybug he once spared. Overwhelmed by guilt, he sought salvation through a wandering Buddhist monk, abandoning banditry to carve religious statues that channeled his turbulent emotions into sacred art.

Decades later, Gaoh clashed again with Akanemaru in a competition to craft a phoenix for a grand Buddha statue. Though his skill surpassed his rival, Akanemaru’s exposure of Gaoh’s past led to his remaining arm being severed as retribution. Undeterred, Gaoh wandered onward with a loyal dog, sculpting with fervor despite his broken body.

As an incarnation of Saruta—a soul recurring across eras in the *Phoenix* series—Gaoh embodies karmic cycles and rebirth. His lives intertwine suffering, transgression, and fleeting chances for redemption, mirroring Buddhist teachings on accountability. His story weaves the inevitability of consequence with the fragile hope that even scarred spirits might seek light, though the shadows of past sins linger.
