Mrs. Yamada is the human matriarch of the Yamada family, living with her husband, son Yohei, and their adopted kitten Chi in an apartment complex that prohibits pets. She and Yohei discover the lost Chi during a walk and bring her home. Facing the apartment restrictions, Mrs. Yamada attempts to find Chi another home. When this proves unsuccessful, she chooses to keep the kitten. She takes primary responsibility for Chi's daily care alongside Yohei. This includes tasks such as bathing Chi, who initially resists, and managing litter box training challenges after Chi confuses household items for appropriate toileting spots. Following these incidents, she collaborates with her husband to acquire necessary cat care supplies like a litter box. Her role centers on integrating Chi into household routines and teaching basic domestic behaviors. She remains Chi's consistent caregiver throughout the kitten's adjustment to her new home.
