OVA
Description
Kanako Hosokawa is a supporting character who appears in the third season of the anime, first introduced as a first-year student at Lillian Girls' Academy. Physically, she is notably tall for her age, standing at 179 centimeters, and she has very long hair. Her personality is initially quiet and aloof, bordering on unapproachable, which has led classmates and others to describe her as a lone wolf. Despite this solitary demeanor, she reveals a completely different side when around Yumi Fukuzawa, becoming kind, attentive, and talkative.
Kanako’s primary motivation is centered on her intense admiration for Yumi Fukuzawa. She idolizes Yumi to an extreme degree, envisioning her as the living embodiment of a perfect and pure girl who has no involvement with men. This admiration manifests as obsessive behavior, including following Yumi around the school campus, which leads other characters to jokingly refer to her as an evil spirit or a stalker. Her devotion is rooted in a deep-seated and powerful hatred of men, which she describes as the lowest possible form of life. This hatred is more aggressive than a simple phobia and stems from a traumatic family incident. Her father had an affair with and impregnated Yuuko, a former upperclassman and basketball club senior whom Kanako greatly admired. This event led to her parents divorce and shattered her trust in her father, generalizing into a profound distrust and dislike of all men.
In the story, Kanako serves as a catalyst for Yumi’s personal growth and introduces a conflict that challenges the peace of the Yamayurikai, or student council. Her role becomes prominent during preparations for a school festival collaboration with the all-boys Hanadera Academy. Driven by her fear that Yumi will be corrupted by interacting with boys, Kanako actively tries to keep her away from the event. Her fabricated image of Yumi as a perfectly pure entity is shattered when Yumi directly confronts her, denying this one-sided projection and asserting her own more complex reality. This confrontation causes a severe strain in their relationship. However, Yumi is determined to repair the bond and eventually makes a bet with Kanako based on the results of the school's athletic festival. Kanako, who had no initial intention of participating, becomes highly active in the sports meet, performing well as a kicker and relay runner. After her team loses the overall competition, she must serve as a helper for the Yamayurikai.
Key relationships define much of Kanako's development. Her entire worldview is initially built around a deified image of Yumi, making their dynamic central to her character arc. Her hatred of men is directly contrasted with Sachiko Ogasawara, who also dislikes men but for different reasons. The resolution of Kanako’s story comes with a reconciliation with her former senior, Yuuko, who is now her stepmother. In a crucial conversation, Kanako learns that her father and Yuuko’s relationship was not as predatory or forced as she had imagined, as Yuuko had been struggling with a career-ending injury and the relationship developed from consultations. This revelation allows Kanako to begin healing, restore her relationship with her father, and accept her new half-sister, Chikako. Through this process, she regains her emotional balance.
While Kanako appears as a candidate who could become Yumi’s petite soeur or younger sister, she herself states she has no such desire, declaring there is no need for such lowly wishes. Over the course of the third season, she shows notable development, moving from a bitter, obsessive fan and stalker to a more stable individual who reconciles with her past. Her abilities are not supernatural but practical; she is tall and athletic, having played basketball in middle school, which contributes to her performance in the athletic festival. Ultimately, she begins to find her place, with plans to join the school's basketball team, and her strained relationship with Yumi evolves into a genuine, if initially complicated, friendship.
