Description
Kim Chowon is better known by her Japanese name, Urara Kasugano, and her alter ego, Cure Lemonade, from the anime Yes! Precure 5. She is a first-year student at L'Ecole des Cinq Lumières Middle School, beginning the series at thirteen or fourteen years old. She is of mixed heritage, being half-Japanese through her mother and half-French through her father. Her family consists of her father and grandfather, as her mother, a renowned actress, passed away from an illness when Chowon was young. This loss is a defining event in her life and is the source of her dream to follow in her mother's footsteps and become an actress herself.
Chowon's outward personality is consistently cheerful, polite, and energetic, displaying a level of maturity beyond her years, likely due to her career in the entertainment industry. However, this bright exterior initially masked a deeper sense of isolation and difficulty in forming genuine connections with her peers. Her busy schedule as a young idol and actress, combined with her reserved nature around new people, left her with few close friends at school. She often spent time alone, reading scripts, and her polite speech patterns, using formal language with most adults, further set her apart. Despite her driven and serious dedication to her craft, she shares a more absent-minded and food-loving side with her friend Nozomi Yumehara, often becoming the target of comedic scolding from their more level-headed teammate, Rin Natsuki. Her love for curry is particularly notable, as it is tied to a happy childhood memory of her mother's cooking, and she possesses her mother's handwritten recipe.
Chowon's primary motivation is to honor her late mother's legacy by becoming a great actress. This goal is a source of both determination and intense internal pressure. She initially believes that focusing solely on acting is the only path to achieving this dream, which leads her to struggle with self-doubt, especially when opportunities are scarce. Her role in the story is as a member of the Pretty Cure 5, the team of magical warriors who fight to protect the Dream Collet from the evil organization Nightmare in the first season and later the Eternal corporation in Yes! Precure 5 GoGo!. She transforms into Cure Lemonade, the Pretty Cure of Effervescence, whose theme color is yellow and who wields the power of light. Her transformation is triggered by a device called a Pinky Catch, and her introductory phrase is "The effervescent scent of bursting lemon, Cure Lemonade!".
Her key relationships are central to her development. The most significant is with Nozomi Yumehara, the team's leader and Cure Dream. Nozomi's direct and accepting friendship helps Chowon begin to open up and feel less alone. Nozomi also plays a pivotal role in Chowon's career, encouraging her to accept a singing debut, not as a betrayal of her acting dreams, but as another way to reach people and become a more well-rounded performer. This advice allows Chowon to compose her debut song, "Extraordinary! Door of Courage," and expand her career as an idol singer. Another important relationship is with the fairy Syrup, who appears in the GoGo! sequel. Their bond deepens as they share their dreams and fears, with Syrup going to great lengths to help her, such as retrieving a forgotten script for an audition.
Chowon's development is a clear journey of self-acceptance and finding the courage to show vulnerability. She transitions from a reserved, lonely girl who strictly defined herself by her mother's path to a more confident and expressive individual who can embrace multiple facets of her identity as an actress, singer, and friend. Her growth is tested by setbacks, such as failing an acting audition, but she perseveres, continuing to refine her skills. As an adult, as shown in the sequel Kibou no Chikara ~Otona Pretty Cure '23~, she has successfully realized her dream, appearing as a confident and accomplished actress with waist-length blonde hair and light vermillion glasses. As Cure Lemonade, her notable abilities include light-based attacks such as Lemonade Flash and Lemonade Shining, which release clusters of yellow butterflies, and the Prism Chain, which creates butterfly-shaped chains to immobilize enemies. She can also project energy barriers. Through the series, she and her teammates gain enhanced powers via a red rose, unlocking upgraded forms like Super Cure and Rainbow Cure.
