TV-Series
Description
Natsuki Rin is a second-year student at L'École des Cinq Lumières, exhibiting both tomboyish and feminine traits. She possesses a passion for sports and accessory design, coupled with a straightforward, practical, and responsible personality. Rin frequently assumes a nurturing role toward her childhood friend Nozomi and her younger siblings, Ai and Yu. While generally calm, she can display impatience and a hot-headed temperament, leading to conflicts with more reserved individuals like Karen. A deep-seated fear of losing loved ones, particularly Nozomi, and a childhood-rooted aversion to unnatural or frightening phenomena are significant aspects of her character.
Her journey as Cure Rouge begins when she initially rejects Nozomi's invitation to join Pretty Cure due to her busy schedule. Witnessing Nozomi endangered during a battle with the Nightmare operative Girinma activates Rin's determination to protect her friend, awakening the red butterfly that grants her the Pinky Catch transformation device. She subsequently transforms into Cure Rouge, the Pretty Cure of Passion, declaring "The red flame of passion, Cure Rouge!" upon channeling her resolve with the phrase "Pretty Cure Metamorphose!".
As Cure Rouge, she wields fire-based abilities. Her primary attacks include Rouge Fire, where a butterfly mark ignites to launch a fire projectile, and the upgraded Rouge Burning, utilizing the Rouge Tact device to generate a larger fire blast. In *Yes! Pretty Cure 5 GoGo!*, she gains Fire Strike, creating a fireball kicked at high speed. She also contributes to team attacks like Five Explosion and Rainbow Rose Explosion.
Physically, Cure Rouge's transformation alters Rin's appearance: her short brown hair turns bright red and stylizes like flames, adorned with a magenta swallowtail butterfly hair clip and matching earrings. Her eyes shift to red, and she dons a cream-colored dress with red accents, featuring a butterfly-shaped chest bow with a green gem, red gloves with butterfly gems, orange boots, and mauve shorts. In *GoGo!*, her outfit evolves to include a pale pink ruffled skirt, a vest with a scalloped collar, and accessories connected to her CureMo communication device. Movie appearances introduce advanced forms: Super Cure Rouge features wing-like boots and fiery butterfly wings, while Rainbow Cure Rouge (from *All Stars DX 2*) adopts a feather-themed design with golden wings and lighter color tones.
Rin's personal relationships are central. Her foundational bond with Nozomi drives her initial decision to become a Cure and remains steadfast into adulthood. She navigates a rocky start with Karen due to clashing personalities, though mutual respect develops through combat cooperation. A subplot involves a secret crush on Kyosuke Momoi, later revealed as the Nightmare operative Mucardia, who manipulated her to access Pretty Cure. Her family life includes helping at her parents' flower shop and managing her mischievous younger siblings.
Her interests evolve across the series. While initially skilled in multiple sports, she joins the futsal club after realizing her enjoyment of it. Her talent for accessory design leads her to create jewelry for Natts House, hinting at a future career path. In spin-offs like *Otona PreCure '23*, she is depicted as an adult working professionally in accessory design while maintaining her pragmatic personality. Her adult attire includes business-appropriate clothing like ruffled blouses, ankle-length skirts, and earrings.
The etymology of her name reflects her character: "Natsuki" combines "summer" (natsu), referencing her fire motif, and "tree" (ki), while "Rin" may imply "dignified" if written with specific kanji. "Cure Rouge" derives from the French word for "red," aligning with her color theme and the series' use of French terminology.
