TV-Series
Description
Maya Tōmi, a first-generation Fafner pilot from Tatsumiyajima, shared an early friendship with Shōko Hazama, who battled chronic illness. Amidst the first Festum assault, Maya aided Shōko's evacuation and witnessed civilians vanishing, confronting the conflict's harsh reality.
Initially slated for pilot duty, a physical handicap redirected her path to an operator role within the CDC (Central Dogma Center). She cultivated close bonds with peers like Kazuki Makabe and Sōshi Minashiro, consistently displaying perceptiveness toward their emotional states. Her family includes her mother, Chizuru, the island's sole doctor, and her older sister, Yumiko, a teacher for the handicapped. Maya herself lacks medical aptitude, struggling with fundamental tasks such as applying bandages.
Her trajectory shifts during *Exodus*. Transitioning to pilot status, she trains under Kyousuke Mizoguchi in jet combat. When Festum disrupt a training exercise, she deliberately draws enemy fire to shield Mizoguchi, securing permission to deploy in her designated unit, the Mark Sieben. She then destroys multiple Festum clones at sea. Post-battle, she interacts with medical personnel and assists duties at the restaurant Rakuen. Her personality merges compassion with assertiveness, occasionally expressed through humor aimed at colleagues. She evolves into the unit's primary sniper, noted for calmness under pressure and lethal precision.
In *The Beyond*, Maya joins the Fifth Operation Azure to rescue Sōshi Minashiro and Esperanto children held by Maris Excelsior. Piloting the upgraded Mark Sieben Kai (nicknamed Azrael), she delivers aerial support alongside Sui Kaburagi. Facing a Festum mimicking her sister, she endures a brutal assimilation attack, losing her right eye before Kenji Kondou intervenes to free her.
Three years post-Operation Azure, Maya remains an active pilot. She exhibits profound caution toward Sōshi upon his return to Wadatsumijima due to his prolonged enemy exposure, physically restraining him when he assaults Miwa Hino. Resolved to prevent his defection to the Festum even at the cost of his resentment, she observes the island's lenient reintegration efforts. Learning of Sōshi's intent to deploy the Mark Nicht Fafner to destroy the island, she urgently mobilizes in her Fafner to counter the threat.
Maya's journey reveals a fusion of compassion, inner resilience, and combat proficiency. She challenges authority when necessary and possesses sharp observational skills regarding others' emotions. Her experiences—marked by severe physical trauma and the psychological toll of war—continuously shape her perspective and unwavering commitment to protecting her community.
