Description
Maya Tōmi, a Tatsumiyajima resident and first-generation Fafner pilot, lives with her doctor mother Chizuru and elder sister Yumiko, who jointly operate a home-based hospital. Initially serving as a Central Dogma Center operator due to a temporary physical handicap preventing Fafner boarding, she later transitions to pilot duties. Maya maintains a close friendship with the chronically frail Shōko Hazama, visiting her before school. During the initial Festum assault, Maya aids Shōko's evacuation and witnesses civilians vanish into a Festum-generated black hole, leaving her traumatized. Shōko's death triggers profound emotional distress, compounded by Maya's inability to combat the threat at that time.
As a pilot specializing in long-range combat, Maya operates the flight-capable Fafner Mark Sieben wielding the Dragon Tooth sniper rifle. Her exceptionally calm and precise combat style under pressure earns her renown as the unit's top sniper. Training under Kyousuke Mizoguchi—whom she jokingly calls "dad"—during *Exodus* exercises, she demonstrates rapid reflexes against an unidentified aircraft and battles Festum clones at sea.
In *The Beyond*, Maya joins the Fifth Operation Azure to rescue Soushi Minashiro and abducted Esperanto children. Confronting a Festum mimicking her sister, she suffers assimilation and loses her right eye when the entity deflects her attack. External intervention later reverses the assimilation. Three years post-incident, wary of Soushi's prolonged enemy exposure, she openly vows to prevent his defection regardless of his resentment.
Maya develops romantic feelings for Kazuki Makabe, influencing her interactions. She exhibits perceptiveness about others' emotions, teasing Shōko regarding her interest in Kazuki and Soushi. Captured by the Neo UN, she briefly pilots the Mark Raison before escaping. Her family's medical expertise contrasts with her own struggles in basic first aid.
During later operations, Maya observes technological advancements like her Mark Sieben's upgrade to Mark Sieben Kai (Azrael). She reacts skeptically to Soushi piloting the Mark Nicht, mobilizing immediately when he threatens the island's destruction. Her combat role expands to coordinating aerial engagements with newer units like Sui Kaburagi's Amaterasu.
