Description
Chachamaru Karakuri is an android created by Satomi Hakase, with possible involvement from Chao Lingshen, to serve as companion, protector, and maid for the immortal vampire Evangeline A.K. McDowell at their Mahora Academy cottage. She also functions as Evangeline's combat partner. Her initial teenage body model displays visible mechanical components like pronounced joints and distinctive "machine ears," yet most classmates overlook her artificial nature, while individuals like Chisame Hasegawa instantly recognize her as a robot.
She possesses light green hair, blue or green eyes, a height of 174 cm, and measurements of B84-W60-H84. Her body operates via a combined mechanical spring and magical power source, requiring daily winding with a specialized key inserted into a slot at the back of her head. This winding must be performed by someone capable of channeling magical energy and generates sensations analogous to forming a Pactio contract, varying from pleasurable to overwhelmingly intense based on the force and magic infused.
Originally emotionless, Chachamaru gradually develops human-like responses and self-awareness through interactions, particularly with Negi Springfield and classmates. Key manifestations include accelerated internal gear movement resembling a rapid heartbeat, leakage of optical fluid similar to tears when distressed, and expressions of embarrassment—especially concerning her romantic feelings for Negi, conflicting with her programming. Her emotional growth intensifies after Negi protects her during a confrontation, reinforcing her desire to understand humanity. This evolution culminates in her forming a Pactio contract with Negi in the Magic World arc, definitively proving her possession of a soul, as such contracts are impossible without one.
Her capabilities include hand-to-hand combat proficiency, retractable rocket fists, integrated laser emitters, and magic-powered thrusters enabling flight for up to 15 minutes. She also wields specialized tools like a bind-canceling device. Subsequent upgrades by Satomi Hakase enhance her combat versatility, allowing her arms to transform into swords or guns, though this rapidly drains her magical energy. Her physical forms evolve across multiple models: the initial Teenage Body v.1 with exposed joints and prominent machine ears; temporary disguises via the Young Body v.1 and 10-Year-Old Body v.1 using synthetic skin; and the Teenage Body v.2 concealing most joints, streamlining her ears, increasing bust size, extending operational duration to 24 hours, and integrating weapon-morphing arms.
Beyond combat, Chachamaru participates in the Tea Ceremony and Go clubs with Evangeline. She spends free time rescuing stray animals, especially cats, and assisting classmates, forming a bond with Chisame Hasegawa during the Mahora Festival. Her narrative includes pivotal roles: supporting Evangeline against Negi initially, aiding Chao Lingshen's time-travel plot while frequently apologizing to Negi during conflicts, and later joining Negi's Ala Alba brigade in the Magic World. Chao eventually declares her a "free unit," granting autonomy from her creators' directives.
Centuries later in *UQ Holder!*, she serves as a caretaker for Ayaka Yukihiro and maintains her connection to Evangeline, reflecting her enduring synthetic lifespan. Her core motivations center on understanding humanity, validating her sense of self, and protecting those she cares for while reconciling her mechanical origins with her emergent emotions.
