Description
Jinta Yadomi, known as Jintan, led the childhood friend group Super Peace Busters. As a child, he radiated energy, charisma, and athleticism, naturally guiding group activities and excelling in games like stag beetle catching. He harbored unspoken romantic feelings for Meiko "Menma" Honma, feelings he fiercely denied and later deeply regretted.
Tragedy struck with Menma's accidental drowning and his mother's subsequent death, triggering Jinta's drastic transformation into a reclusive hikikomori. He abandoned high school, isolating himself at home while playing video games, losing significant weight and gaining a reputation as a "weird shut-in." His disheveled appearance featured mid-length black hair, yellowish-brown eyes, and casual wear: a red shirt bearing Japanese characters for "underground people" (reflecting his isolation), blue jeans, and running shoes. He sometimes wore black-rimmed glasses as a public disguise.
His isolation fractured when Menma's ghost appeared solely to him, requesting help with an unresolved wish. Initially dismissing her as a stress hallucination ("the beast of summer"), he reluctantly reconnected with estranged friends. This forced him to confront guilt over Menma's death—particularly his final words to her—and his emotional repression. He reconciled with group members, including Naruko "Anaru" Anjo, whose long-unacknowledged romantic feelings he had overlooked, and Atsumu "Yukiatsu" Matsuyuki, who resented Jinta's past superiority.
During this reunion, Jinta displayed sarcasm, apathy, and underlying sensitivity. Despite his abrasive exterior, he demonstrated protectiveness, defending Anaru from school rumors and prioritizing Menma's wish despite skepticism. Struggling with vulnerability, he couldn't cry for years, though Menma's presence gradually helped him process grief for her and his mother. His development culminated in confessing his love to Menma and uniting the group to fulfill her final wish: reuniting the Super Peace Busters for collective healing.
After Menma's peaceful departure, Jinta reintegrated: resuming school, securing part-time work, and maintaining friendships. A year later, during the group's letter-writing ritual to Menma, he showed renewed purpose, collaborating with Tetsudo "Poppo" Hisakawa and exhibiting greater emotional openness. By the ten-year anniversary stage reading, he had co-founded a company with Poppo and entered a mutual romantic relationship with Anaru, signaling ongoing recovery.
Notable traits include left-handedness, a birthdate of April 16, and a keet-like childhood demeanor contrasting his teenage melancholy. His surname, Yadomi, combines "inn/lodging" (宿) and "sea/ocean" (海), while his given name, Jinta, incorporates "benevolence" (仁) and "thick/big" (太).
