Description
Meiko "Menma" Honma died accidentally at age ten, drowning after chasing Jinta Yadomi. He had rejected her during a childhood interaction with their friend group, the Super Peace Busters, by calling her "ugly." Her physical appearance features long silver hair, light blue eyes, pale skin, and a slim build, standing 147 cm tall and weighing 36 kg.

Five years later, she manifests as a ghost wearing a white dress with a blue ribbon, identical to her attire when she died, perpetually barefoot from losing her sandals in the river. Though her form appears physically aged to around fifteen, she retains childlike speech patterns, mannerisms, and a cheerful, innocent disposition. Initially, only Jinta can see or hear her, though she interacts physically with the environment, moving objects and writing in a notebook to communicate. Her presence causes tangible effects like "heavier air" or familiar scents when embracing others. Her existence is tied to an unfulfilled wish she cannot recall, requiring the reunion of the Super Peace Busters for resolution. Her core personality includes extreme selflessness, prioritizing others' well-being, frequent crying when others are hurt, persistent optimism, and feelings of loneliness upon realizing her family has moved on.

Her relationships define her character. She harbored romantic feelings for Jinta, expressed in a final letter stating her love was "the kind where she wanted to be his bride." She deeply cared for her younger brother Satoshi, often instructing him to "guard the house" instead of joining her adventures, inadvertently contributing to his neglect after her death. Within the friend group, she appreciated Chiriko's gentleness, Atsumu's diligence, Tetsudo's humor, and Naruko's stubbornness.

Her ghostly return forces the Super Peace Busters to confront their unresolved guilt and grief. Her wish is revealed as a collective desire: she wanted Jinta to stop crying, a plea he misinterpreted as a request to play hide-and-seek on the day she died. Granting this wish allows her to move on, culminating in a final farewell where all friends see and hear her write "Found you" before she disappears.

In expanded media, the anime film depicts her writing farewell letters to each friend during their search. The 10th-anniversary audio drama suggests her potential reincarnation, with characters sensing her presence in objects like potato liquor. Her name combines Meiko (芽衣子, "bud/sprout," "garment," "child") and Honma (本間, "origin," "space/time"). Trivia notes include her mixed Russian-Japanese heritage, favorite food (curry), and the Latin meaning of her name backwards ("amnem") translating to "the river," referencing her death location.
