Description
Naruko Anjou, also called Anaru, is a central member of the Super Peace Busters, a group of childhood friends from Chichibu, Saitama. As a child, she had brown hair, wore glasses with dark grey frames, and frequently dressed in a blue shirt featuring a yellow shooting star, paired with a white skirt and blue running shoes.

Her personality includes a tendency to be easily influenced, often conforming to peer expectations despite internal disagreement, as observed by her friend Chiriko Tsurumi. While she projects a cold or dismissive attitude towards Jinta Yadomi publicly, especially around high school friends, she maintains deep, persistent concern for his well-being. This concern manifests in regular visits to deliver homework during his prolonged school absence and habits like grooming herself, such as painting her nails, before seeing him. She harbors longstanding romantic feelings for Jinta, complicated by guilt over her indirect role in Meiko "Menma" Honma’s childhood accident—specifically, asking a question that prompted Menma to flee and subsequently drown.

As a teenager, her appearance changes significantly: her hair becomes orange, typically styled in twin tails with star-shaped accessories. She wears a school uniform consisting of a white collared shirt, dark magenta skirt, dark blue socks, and brown shoes. She works part-time at a video game store and maintains a substantial personal collection of manga and video games; this collection later becomes a catalyst for reconnecting with Jinta and Tetsudō "Poppo" Hisakawa.

Her relationships are defined by emotional complexity. With Jinta, she struggles between frustration over his fixation on Menma’s memory and her unwavering affection. After Menma’s spirit helps reconcile the group, Naruko confesses her feelings to Jinta, though their relationship remains unresolved by the series’ conclusion. Regarding Menma, she experiences admiration mixed with envy, stemming from Menma’s childhood closeness to Jinta. She feels enduring guilt over Menma’s death but actively participates in fulfilling Menma’s final wish. Atsumu "Yukiatsu" Matsuyuki views Naruko as a kindred spirit due to their shared experiences of unrequited love, leading him to propose dating multiple times and to intervene when she faces harassment.

Her character development progresses across multiple installments. In the original series, she evolves from insecurity to openly confronting her guilt and expressing her emotions, confessing to Jinta and reconciling with her role in Menma’s accident. The film sequel, *Letters to Menma*, depicts her one year later, still processing grief but taking proactive steps in life, including considering how to approach Jinta romantically. She struggles to articulate her emotions in a letter to Menma, reflecting ongoing but improving emotional resilience. The 10th-anniversary stage drama, set a decade later, reveals she has become a nurse and maintains ties with the Super Peace Busters. During a group gathering, she overhears Jinta’s intention to propose marriage. After initially feigning sleep, she reacts with flustered excitement, agreeing to marry him once they formally date, confirming their romantic relationship.

Her name carries symbolic weight: "Naruko" combines "ringing" (鳴) and "child" (子), while "Anjou" derives from "peace, quiet" (安) and "castle" (城).
