TV-Series
Description
Kapaeru is a demon from Hell, a hybrid entity specifically described as half-kappa and half-water sprite. His name fuses "kappa" with "kaeru" (Japanese for frog), though he becomes angered if mistaken for a frog. He serves as a member of the Yokai Patrol, tasked with capturing or eliminating demons escaping Hell into the human world. His primary role involves gathering intelligence on demon activities, utilizing connections in the human realm, including a secret contact he values deeply.

In the original manga and 1973 anime series, Kapaeru largely functions as comic relief, frequently encountering absurd or humiliating situations. His missions often involve significant physical alterations, such as mutation from supernatural exposure or temporary body-swapping caused by a bee demon, highlighting his vulnerability despite his demonic nature. His abilities include spraying water from his scalp, teleportation, walking on walls, body stretching, toxin resistance, and enhanced swimming.

The 2006 OVA *Demon Prince Enma* portrays a more tragic narrative for Kapaeru. He maintains his intelligence-gathering role, deceiving humans into believing his kappa appearance is a disguise. His secret contact aids in locating rogue demons, but both are killed by a demon possessing Yukihime, emphasizing his dedication and sacrifice.

In manga spin-offs, particularly *Satanikus Enma Kerberos*, Kapaeru's character takes a darker turn as he betrays teammates Enma and Yukihime, showcasing a complex and morally ambiguous side absent in earlier depictions. This betrayal contrasts with his prior portrayal as a dependable ally. Across all media, Kapaeru consistently demonstrates a blend of comedic mishaps and genuine commitment to his mission, though his fate and allegiance vary significantly by adaptation.
