Description
Mepple is a small fairy creature who originates from the Garden of Light, a peaceful realm threatened by the forces of darkness. He holds the distinguished title of the chosen warrior and designated protector of the Princess of Hope, Mipple, with whom he shares a deep, affectionate bond. Due to the energy limitations of maintaining their true forms within the human world, known as the Garden of Rainbows, Mepple and Mipple typically take energy-saving forms that resemble small, colorful cellular devices. In the original Japanese version, Mepple has the distinctive habit of ending his sentences with the phrase mepo. Physically, in his true fairy form, he is characterized by lemon-yellow fur, dark blue eyes with light blue highlights, bearlike ears, and a star-shaped tip on his tail.
Mepple possesses a notably complex personality, marked by a strong sense of arrogance rooted in his status as a chosen warrior. He frequently expects the best treatment and can be demanding, particularly when it comes to his persistent hunger, often whining to be fed. This self-centered and somewhat lazy demeanor leads to frequent, heated arguments with his human partner, Misumi Nagisa, as he openly criticizes her and considers her easy to manipulate. Despite this contentious relationship, a genuine, if unspoken, bond of care and concern exists between them. However, his personality transforms completely when he is with Mipple, where he becomes gentle, loving, and openly affectionate, frequently hugging her and avoiding his usual demanding behavior. He also displays a mild jealousy towards Pollun, a younger fairy, due to Polluns close past with Mipple, and often wishes Pollun would act less selfishly, even though Mepple himself exhibits similar traits.
Mepples primary motivation is the protection of Mipple and the Garden of Light from the Dark Zone. He was dispatched to the human world alongside Mipple to find the legendary warriors known as Pretty Cure, leading him to Nagisa. In the context of the crossover film Precure All Stars DX: Minna Tomodachi—Kiseki no Zenin Daishūgō, his role is to continue serving as the transformation partner for Nagisa, enabling her to become Cure Black. When the collective remnants of past enemies form the powerful entity Fusion, Mepple joins forces with the other mascot fairies to support their respective Pretty Cure warriors. In the final battle against Fusion, he and the other fairies wield the Rainbow Miracle Lights, devices that channel the collective hope of the audience and the cures to empower the warriors and achieve victory. His role in this story reaffirms his function as a source of transformation and support, a constant across his appearances.
Mepples key relationships are central to his character. His most significant partnership is with Misumi Nagisa, his caretaker and the human who transforms into Cure Black. This relationship is defined by constant bickering and verbal sparring, yet it is built on a foundation of mutual reliance and hidden care. In stark contrast, his relationship with Mipple is one of pure devotion and gentleness; she is the only one before whom his arrogance fades completely. He also shares a dynamic with Pollun, the Prince of Light, marked by jealousy and annoyance, though he ultimately accepts the younger fairy as part of his extended family. Finally, he maintains a protective stance toward the Queen of the Garden of Light and other royal figures like Princess Lulun.
Throughout the main series and into the crossover films, Mepple undergoes subtle but notable development. Initially, his adjustment to human life is difficult, and he becomes severely stressed and ill, requiring Nagisas intervention to recover. This experience, while not erasing his spoiled personality, forges a stronger, unspoken understanding between them. His journey leads him to a point where, after the final defeat of the Evil King, he and Mipple choose to face eternal sleep rather than return to the Garden of Light and leave their human partners, a decision that underscores the depth of their loyalty and love. In the Max Heart sequel, they are revived to continue their duties, and by the end, they are granted the ability to live permanently in the human world without negative consequences. This arc shows a transition from a demanding fairy to a devoted companion willing to make profound sacrifices.
Mepples notable abilities are intrinsically linked to his function as a Pretty Cure fairy. His primary ability is to use the Card Commune or Heartful Commune devices to enable Nagisa Misumi to transform into the warrior Cure Black. Beyond transformation, he can sense the presence of dark forces and enemies. In his true form, he has the ability to hold a Prism Stone, a powerful gem, in the tip of his tail. He also possesses enough latent power to transform himself into the Pretty Commune, a device used to power up the Pretty Cure and help another warrior, Shiny Luminous, transform. The Rainbow Miracle Lights, which he wields in the All Stars DX film, are another notable ability, as they channel hope into a tangible force capable of defeating powerful enemies.
