OVA
Description
Mai Kobayashi first appears as the non-playable enemy Levi Tolar before becoming playable in later installments. She is not the biological daughter of Kenzo Kobayashi, but was one of his test subjects for T-Link System research. Kenzo altered her memories to see him as a father figure, which amplified her innate Psychodriver abilities. Unlike her supposed older sister Aya Kobayashi, Mai was eventually discarded and declared dead to further enhance Aya's powers.
Kidnapped by the Aerogaters and brainwashed, Mai was transformed into Levi Tolar. Under this identity, she believed herself to be a Balmarian and the leader of those aboard the Neviim, serving as the core of the Judecca unit. Defeated by the SRX and ATX Teams, her identity was confirmed by Aya during their confrontation. Mai survived due to the Septuagint's regeneration, though the interrupted process erased her memories as Levi. Remnants of those memories continued to haunt her psychologically.
Mai is profoundly shy and silent, possessing exceptionally powerful Psychodriver abilities. She demonstrates loyalty to those who aided her, including Aya, Kenzo, Ryusei Date, and other SRX Team members. She shares close bonds with Latune Subbota, Shine Hausen, Arado Balanga, and Seolla Schweitzer, partly due to their similar ages. Mai harbors a crush on Ryusei Date, creating a friendly rivalry with Latune for his affection. She adopts some of Ryusei’s mannerisms, such as shouting during attacks. Piloting the ART-1, she performs a combination attack with Ryusei called the T-Link Double Knuckle.
As Levi Tolar, Mai exhibits a ruthless and egocentric personality, viewing humans only as weapons for the Balmarians and believing nothing could defeat her or the Judecca. This alter ego occasionally resurfaces, tormenting Mai through nightmares and psychological instability. Despite concerns about her mental state, her potent Psychodriver abilities lead to her integration into the SRX Team. She pilots the R-Gun Powered, enabling a Twin Contact with Aya to facilitate the SRX's HTB Cannon attack. Over time, she confronts and overcomes the lingering influence of Levi’s memories.
Mai appears in various games and an anime series. Her story involves ongoing struggles with her dual identity, recovery of her true self, and contributions to her team’s efforts against various threats. The psychological tension between her identity as Mai and the residual presence of Levi remains central to her development.
