Description
Ryoto Hikawa, the youngest son in a family running a karate dojo born after several daughters, faced significant emotional neglect. His parents prioritized finding a masculine heir over his gentle disposition, while his aggressive tomboy sisters frequently bullied him, fostering a withdrawn personality and self-loathing. This isolation led him toward academic pursuits and video games, particularly "Burning PT." His strategic intellect and emerging psychodriver abilities made him exceptionally skilled at the game.
This proficiency attracted the Divine Crusaders (DC), who recruited him as a pilot. However, transitioning from simulated combat to real mecha piloting proved disastrous due to his inherently non-confrontational and merciful nature clashing with military expectations. His poor performance led DC officer Adler Koch to experiment on him, altering his memories to create a suicidal attacker. Rescued by Rio Mei Long, this event forged a deep bond between them and facilitated his defection to the Earth Federation Alliance (EFA).
Initially distrusted within the EFA, Ryoto's technical genius eventually earned recognition. He excelled at reverse-engineering advanced technology, most notably miniaturizing and proliferating the Tesla Drive system, which became foundational for many EFA mecha. His career advanced significantly under Ring Mao of Mao Industries, where he gained confidence and independence. There, he designed original machines like the Armorlion and replicated the Huckebein MkII, gifting a unit to Rio. He later developed the mass-produced Huckebein MkII-M and contributed to early Huckebein MkIII prototypes.
Following a business-related transfer orchestrated by Ring Mao, Ryoto joined Jonathan Kazahara's team, shifting his focus to super robot development. His engineering philosophy centers on creating machines that preserve life rather than enable destruction, contrasting with his earlier exposure to militarism.
Personality-wise, Ryoto remains introverted and socially awkward, especially around women outside of Rio. He carries unresolved angst from familial rejection but channels this into his work, finding purpose in contributing to the EFA's technological edge. Though physically capable as a black belt in karate, he avoids combat, preferring design and innovation. Key relationships include unspoken romantic feelings for Rio Mei Long, whom he considers his protector and confidant; professional respect for Meiya Mitsurugi, viewed as a mentor; and deep loyalty to Ring Mao for enabling his career. He maintains trust-based connections with figures like Kyosuke Nanbu and Raidiese F. Branstein while harboring contempt for Adler Koch and Tenzan Nakajima.
His psychodriver abilities, noted as level L9 in earlier deployments, complement his technical work but see limited combat application. Across his development, Ryoto evolved from a traumatized individual into a confident engineer, channeling past struggles into a commitment to protective technology.
