Description
Aya Kobayashi serves as the captain of the SRX team, an elite unit within the Earth Federation Army's Far East Branch. She is a young woman of 21 years, standing 168 centimeters tall, and holds the military rank of captain. She is the pilot of the R-3 unit, which is the upper torso and head component of the giant robot SRX, and she also pilots the R-3 Powered form. Her father is Dr. Kenzo Kobayashi, the brilliant but morally ambiguous scientist who developed the T-Link System, a technology that harnesses psychic energy. Aya herself is a powerful Psychodriver, a person capable of generating and using this psychic energy.

On the surface, Aya presents herself as a responsible, professional, and strong-willed leader. She has a competitive streak and a stated desire to be as strong as any male counterpart. She is often seen as the mature anchor for her team, which includes the hot-headed and enthusiastic Ryusei Date and the calm but prideful Raidiese F. Branstein. Much of her daily responsibility involves not only making tactical decisions in combat but also mediating the frequent and petty arguments between these two pilots. Despite her authoritative role, she harbors significant self-doubt about her leadership abilities and her own worth, a vulnerability she often conceals behind a facade of calm professionalism. Her few moments of leisure are spent enjoying quiet activities like visiting art museums.

Aya's background is central to her character. She is not the biological daughter of Dr. Kenzo Kobayashi but was originally a test subject (Subject Number 7) at his institute for psychic research. Following a tragic accident with the T-Link System that killed the people she believed to be her mother and sister, Kenzo manipulated her memories, implanting the identity of his daughter to both atone for his inhumane research and to heighten her latent psychic abilities. This fabricated past includes the existence of her "sister," Mai Kobayashi, who was once the enemy Aerogater commander Levi Tolar before her own memories were rewritten. Aya is initially unaware of this truth, believing sincerely in her role as her father's daughter and the trauma of losing her family.

Within the story, Aya's primary role is the linchpin of the SRX team. Her high-level Psychodriver abilities are essential for the complex and dangerous process of combining the three separate units (R-1, R-2, and R-3) into the powerful SRX. During the combination, she must shoulder a tremendous psychic burden, effectively managing the mental load for the entire team. A key relationship in her life is with her commanding officer, Major Ingram Plissken. She looks up to him significantly and holds deep feelings for him, making his eventual betrayal, when he is revealed to be an agent of the alien Aerogaters, a profoundly devastating emotional blow. This event leaves her with both physical and psychological scars but also sets her on a path to forge her own destiny, as Ingram's dying words encourage her not to dwell on her painful past but to look toward a new future.

Aya's character development revolves around her confronting the artificial nature of her existence. When the antagonist Agilla Setme reveals the truth about her fabricated memories and her origins as a test subject, her sense of self is shattered, and she nearly gives in to despair. However, through the support and encouragement of her comrades, she comes to a crucial realization: the bonds she has formed and the person she has become are real and meaningful, regardless of their manufactured origins. She chooses to forgive Dr. Kenzo, accepting him as her true father, and embraces Mai as her genuine sister. This acceptance strengthens her resolve, allowing her to move past her existential crisis and reaffirm her commitment to her team and her future.

As a Psychodriver, Aya's notable abilities are central to her combat role. She possesses an unusually high level of psychic power, which is the key that unlocks the SRX's full potential. She operates the T-Link System, which allows her to sense enemies and coordinate attacks using her mind. However, her most critical function is during the SRX's combination sequence, where her psychic energy serves as the vital link that synchronizes the three pilots and their machines into a single, formidable fighting unit, a process that puts immense strain on her mentally and physically. Her personal theme music, often associated with her psychic prowess, is titled Psychic Energy.
