Description
Ryokei (also spelled Ryouken) is a young man devastated by personal tragedy, leading to a profound loss of purpose. After an accident strips away everything he holds dear, he plunges into despair and self-abandonment. In this darkness, he discovers the teachings of the Buddhist high priest Rennyo, which offer him answers to the fundamental question "Why live?" – originally posed by the sage Shinran. Deeply drawn to these teachings, Ryokei becomes Rennyo's apprentice, dedicating himself to the priest. As Rennyo's disciple, Ryokei assists in propagating the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist faith. The growing number of their followers incites hostility from rival Buddhist sects, forcing Rennyo and Ryokei to flee Kyoto. They ultimately journey to the Hokuriku region, seeking refuge in Yoshizaki (present-day Fukui Prefecture) to continue their religious mission.
