Description
Guan Yu Gundam, also known as Kan-u Gundam, is a central character in the SD Gundam Sangokuden narrative. He is a warrior of great renown, often referred to by his epithet, the Ghost Beard Great Warrior, a nod to his distinctive and majestic facial hair. His personality is defined by a calm and collected demeanor, combined with deep-seated courage and a strong sense of propriety. As the more mature figure among his sworn siblings, he frequently serves as a grounding presence, often acting as the straight man to the impulsive nature of his younger brother, Zhang Fei Gundam. The foundation of his character lies in the bonds of brotherhood; after a chance encounter, he and Zhang Fei join Liu Bei Gundam in the legendary Peach Garden Oath, forming an unbreakable pact as sworn brothers. Guan Yu places unwavering trust in Liu Bei, and their shared dream of a peaceful land becomes his primary motivation.

His personal history is marked by a tragic past that precedes his life as a wandering warrior. Originally known as Chosei, he lived in a village with his lover, Rouran. Their life was shattered when the formidable Lu Bu Tallgeese attacked, resulting in the destruction of the village and the death of Rouran. Consumed by a desire for vengeance, Guan Yu donned a demonic mask and dedicated his existence to hunting Lu Bu, earning a fearsome reputation as a solitary avenger. This chapter of his life only began to close upon meeting Liu Bei, whose ideals and sincerity helped Guan Yu look beyond his quest for revenge and rediscover a path of honor. After the battle against Dong Zhuo's forces, he was influenced by the power of the Gyokuji (Jade Seal) and evolved into his more powerful form, Ghost Fang Armor Guan Yu.

In the story, Guan Yu is a warrior of immense skill, regarded as one of the top combatants on the battlefield. His prowess is such that even the ambitious Cao Cao Gundam desires to have him as a subordinate. At one point in the conflict, Guan Yu temporarily served under Cao Cao, where he earned the respect of his peers, including military leaders like Xiahou Dun and Xiahou Yuan. Despite Cao Cao's attempts to sway him, Guan Yu's loyalty to Liu Bei remained absolute, and he eventually left to rejoin his sworn brother with his loyalties untarnished. Before departing, he was entrusted with the legendary horse Sekitoba (Red Hare), formerly the steed of Lu Bu, by his ally Zhang Liao Gelgoog. Together with Zhang Liao, Guan Yu can perform a powerful combination technique known as the Azure Pattern Hundred Crack Strike.

Guan Yu takes on disciples and forms his own unit, the Guan Yu Team, which includes his adopted son, Guan Ping Gundam, and the reformed bandit Zhou Shuusou Döben Wolf. His development is complete as a warrior and a person, as he evolves from a ghost of revenge into a pillar of the Shu forces. Late in the war, during a battle against the forces of darkness, Guan Yu is mortally wounded. In his final moments, he finds peace not in vengeance, but in witnessing the strength and maturity of his son, Guan Ping, and dies with a contented expression. His notable abilities are centered on his immense physical strength and mastery of his signature weapon, the Ghost Fang Dragon Moon Blade, a heavy glaive based on the legendary Green Dragon Crescent Blade. His ultimate technique is the Ghost Fang Hundred Crack Strike, a devastating flurry of one hundred thrusts delivered in a single second.
