Description
Hozaburo Ogasawara serves as the young leader of the Bansha Aratamesho, a covert government organization in Edo-era Japan dedicated to hunting supernatural beings known as Yōi. At only twenty years old, he commands this diverse group of warriors, known as Ayashi, from his position within the shogunate's complex political landscape. His background is that of a scholar of rangaku, or Dutch learning, which reflects a deep engagement with Western knowledge and culture, a pursuit that was officially restricted during Japan's period of national seclusion. This intellectual foundation distinguishes him from the more physically oriented members of his team and informs his strategic approach to problems.

Ogasawara's personality is defined by a serious, authoritative, and often cranky demeanor that befits his role as a leader in a high-pressure, secretive agency. He is a strict and exacting boss who must manage a team of highly unconventional individuals, including a cross-dressing priest, a former mountain tribesman, and a wandering drifter named Ryūdō Yukiatsu. Despite his youth, he is noted to be nineteen years younger than Yukiatsu, one of his key operatives, which adds an interesting dynamic to their professional relationship. His motivations are rooted in fulfilling the Bansha Aratamesho's mission to protect the public from Yōi threats while navigating the intricate schemes and political pressures of the shogunate, which frequently place him in perilous situations.

In the story's structure, Ogasawara's primary role is that of the coordinator and commander of the Ayashi's operations. He is responsible for directing the team against supernatural threats, but his duties extend far beyond the battlefield. A significant part of his function involves dealing with the government's bureaucracy, managing the political manipulations that endanger his team, and reporting to powerful figures like Yoshisuke Atobe, the brother of a chief elder. The Ayashi themselves are often treated as pawns by their political patrons, and Ogasawara must constantly balance their mission against these governmental schemes, making him a key figure in the series' political intrigue. His key relationships are primarily with the members of his team, including the spear-wielder Abi, the young fan-user Saizo, and the priest Genbatsu Edo, but his most central dynamic is arguably with the powerful but unruly Yukiatsu.

In terms of development, Ogasawara's character arc sees him navigating the escalating dangers of a new conspiracy that emerges months after major events, requiring him to continue steering his team through even greater threats. While he is not a frontline fighter like the other Ayashi, a significant moment in his growth occurs in the final episode, where he receives special weapons made for him by Yukiatsu, allowing him to participate more directly in combat. His notable abilities lie not in supernatural power but in his scholarly knowledge and his mastery of bureaucracy and political navigation, which prove essential to the team's survival. This skill set leads him to be described as a "Badass Normal," as his unique talent is dealing with the administrative and political machinery that surrounds his dangerous job.
