Description
Yukiatsu Ryuudou, born into a hatamoto samurai family, left home after a transformative event at fifteen. He vanished into the Other World, experiencing only an instant before reappearing a year later. This journey permanently altered him; he found no satisfaction in ordinary human experiences like food or surroundings, leading to profound detachment. The Other World also granted him ayagami, the power to perceive and manifest the true essence of words and names as physical weapons, potent against supernatural yoi.
After returning, Yukiatsu acted recklessly as a ronin and bodyguard, frequently fighting, gambling, and harassing a woman named Oshino. This culminated in a fatal confrontation where he killed his friend Kumoshichi in self-defense. The trauma suppressed this memory, causing him to unconsciously manifest a yoi in Kumoshichi's form. He later endured capture and escape from vagrant camps, scarred by tattoos on his arm and shoulder. These experiences shaped his withdrawn, restrained personality and fostered deep empathy for societal outcasts, including foreigners and the dispossessed.
Recruited into the secret organization Bansha Aratamesho, Yukiatsu joined the Ayashi, combating yoi threats in Edo. His role required collaboration with younger members like Ogasawara Hozaburō, though generational and ideological tensions remained. His protective instincts extended to Atl, an Aztec refugee, bonding over their shared outsider status and mutual resistance to the Other World's allure.
Throughout the series, Yukiatsu confronted Torii Youzou, the South Edo Magistrate exploiting yoi for political power. Torii showed specific interest in Yukiatsu's unique Other World connection. This conflict intensified as Yukiatsu uncovered links between Torii's faction and the Other World, including Matsue Sote, another returnee with the ability to control yoi-like creatures.
In the OVA "Ayashi Divine Comedy," set six months later, Yukiatsu faced renewed Other World threats. His journey culminated in a decisive battle against Torii, who sought to merge the human and Other Worlds. During this conflict, Yukiatsu encountered his younger self from the initial journey, revealing a stable time loop where his future actions guided his past return. This resolved his longstanding alienation, allowing him to embrace his place in the human world and affirm his commitment to protecting it alongside the Ayashi.
