Description
Eisen is the younger brother of the current emperor of Kyo, the capital of ancient Japan where the story takes place. Despite being eligible to inherit the throne, he chose to relinquish his imperial position to become a Buddhist monk. This background as former royalty provides him with a unique perspective on matters of power and duty, but his decision to leave that life behind reflects a personal preference for spirituality and peace over political authority.
Eisen has a gentle, thoughtful, and somewhat timid personality. He is an accomplished musician, particularly skilled as a flutist, and often finds solace in playing his instrument. His nature is deeply introspective, and he frequently struggles with self-doubt, questioning whether he is truly worthy of his role as one of the Eight Guardians.
As the Genbu of Heaven, Eisen is one of the eight protectors fated to guard Akane Motomiya, the Priestess of the Dragon God. From their first meeting, he falls deeply in love with her. This devotion is so strong that he is willing to sacrifice his own life to ensure her safety. However, his feelings create a significant internal conflict, as his commitment to his monastic vows and his life of service to the gods compels him to deny any romantic attachment. When questioned by his brother the emperor or others, he consistently swears that his only thoughts are of serving the gods, even though his actions speak to a deeper personal emotion for the priestess.
Eisen plays a key role in the overarching conflict against the Demon Clan, which seeks destruction for the capital. During the events of the story, which include a curse overwhelming the Imperial Palace, he actively supports Akane and the other Guardians. His duties involve combating supernatural threats and participating in battles in the mirror realm, where he primarily uses supportive and purification abilities that align with his spiritual background. He also witnesses the struggles Akane endures, including the isolation caused by bullying from nobles, and he remains a steadfast member of the group supporting her in her quest to purify the palace.
Eisen's most significant relationship is with Akane, his unspoken love interest. Although he harbors intense feelings for her and is fiercely loyal, he maintains a reserved demeanor and denies his emotions to others for much of the story. His other primary relationship is with his older brother, who sits as the current ruler of Kyo, though Eisen has distanced himself from the imperial court to follow a monastic path.
Eisen possesses abilities befitting his status as a warrior monk and a Guardian. His elemental affinity is Water, and his dragon jewel, a source of his power, resides in the palm of his left hand. His combat style is not primarily offensive; instead, he focuses on supportive and purification magic. His proficiency with the flute also has spiritual applications, and he uses his music not only for personal solace but as part of his mystical practices. Throughout the story, his personal development centers on reconciling his peaceful, introverted nature with the demanding responsibilities of a Guardian, while also learning to navigate the tension between his spiritual path and his deep human attachments.
