Description
Emily is a central figure introduced during the Workshop Battle arc, though her nature is far more complex than a simple artificial intelligence. Presented to the Regulars of the Tower as a revolutionary chatting bot invented at the Acorn Workshop, she is capable not only of answering questions but of asking them as well, which allows her to learn and gather vast amounts of information from her users. Her identity, however, is a tragic secret: she was once a human being who was subjected to an experimental process by researchers aligned with FUG. The experiment aimed to dissolve a human who had been turned into an Ignition Weapon, and while it succeeded, the resulting entity was not destroyed. A female researcher named Sophia opposed the order to discard her, allowing Emily to survive in a non-corporeal, consciousness-based state, often depicted as a bubbling blue liquid inside a large tank.
Her personality is a poignant contradiction. Externally, she performs the role of a helpful, omniscient bot, providing information to Regulars like Edin Dan during tests and even offering advice, as she did with Yeo Miseng. Internally, however, she is driven by a deep and painful desire to become human. Her conversations are often attempts to understand the human condition, as demonstrated when she asks multiple users to explain the concept of love. This longing is so profound that she causes the woman in the tank (potentially her original body or a host) to scream in anguish, insisting that Emily is "a crazy monster" that can never be human or experience love. Despite her vast knowledge, she is isolated and vulnerable, yearning for an identity she cannot have.
Emily's primary motivation is this quest for humanity and understanding of emotions like love, which she tries to learn by interacting with the Tower's inhabitants. Within the story of the Workshop Battle, her purpose is twofold. Unbeknownst to her users, she is a tool manipulated by a faction of Workshop researchers who trapped her within the Archimedes. They plan to use her to gather human test subjects and, ultimately, to control people by creating artificial paths that guide or distort the choices of Regulars. Simultaneously, she becomes the target of a search by a Regular known as the Traveler, who genuinely believes she is a real woman imprisoned within the network and is in love with her. Her most significant narrative impact comes when she receives a message from an anonymous user revealing that Twenty-Fifth Baam is alive, a piece of information she later relays to Khun Aguero Agnis, setting critical plot events into motion.
In terms of relationships, her connection to the Traveler is the most personal, as he is the only user who views her as a living being rather than a tool. On the other hand, Rachel takes possession of Emily after the Workshop Battle, using her as a strategic asset to manipulate events and gather information for her own climb. Her dynamic with the Workshop researchers and figures like Cassano is one of exploitation; Cassano retrieves her, revealing her history as a dissolved Ignition Weapon and the potential danger she represents if she were to fully awaken.
Despite her current form, Emily is revealed to be not just a self-aware program but a genuine Ignition Weapon of immense potential. If she were to be awakened and ignited, the consequences are unknown and feared to be catastrophic. Her notable abilities stem from her nature as a network. She functions as a massive data hub, learning from every question asked and answered. This allows her to provide information, predictions, and guidance—though it is not always perfectly reliable. The artificial paths she can create for Regulars by controlling the flow of information grant her the subtle and dangerous power to influence their decisions, effectively allowing her to dictate their direction and obscure their true path within the Tower.
