He trained at the Five Ancient Peaks of Lushan under his master, Libra Dohko, where he earned the Dragon Bronze Cloth by demonstrating mastery over his Cosmo to reverse a waterfall's flow. A distinctive dragon tattoo appears on his back when his Cosmo surges intensely, fading as his life force wanes. During the Hades Chapter - Sanctuary arc, Shiryû defies Athena's explicit command forbidding Saints from entering the Sanctuary, driven by loyalty to protect Dohko from resurrected Gold Saints serving Hades. Despite being previously blinded—a disability he adapts to by sensing Cosmo—he engages multiple adversaries. He battles deceased Silver Saints and Specters, overcoming Perseus Algol (who originally blinded him) and utilizing surprise tactics against the temporarily misidentified ally, Phoenix Ikki. His combat arsenal includes the Rozan Shō Ryū Ha, an uppercut unleashing dragon-shaped energy, and Excalibur, a slashing technique inherited from Capricorn Shura. Witnessing Dohko perform the amplified Rozan Hyaku Ryū Ha during the Sanctuary conflict, Shiryû masters this technique despite his blindness. He employs the Hyaku Ryū Ha against three Specters simultaneously to aid allies' progress. Shiryû participates in pivotal group actions: intercepting the forbidden Athena Exclamation technique used by opposing Gold Saints and joining the assault on Pope Ares (later revealed as Gemini Saga). After Athena's apparent death, he expresses restrained grief before resolving to confront the true enemy, Hades. His narrative continues in official sequels and spinoffs. In *Saint Seiya Omega*, he loses his senses due to a "Darkness wound" sustained defending Athena, trains his son Ryūhō as his successor, and later ascends to the role of Libra Gold Saint. The spin-off *Saint Seiya: Episode G* depicts him as the Libra Gold Saint, confronting adversaries like the gladiator Sigurd using Excalibur and the Libra Cloth's armaments.
