Shiryu de Dragão began as one of the hundred orphans gathered by the Graad Foundation to train as Saints of Athena. He ventured to the Five Old Peaks of Lushan in China, enduring six years of rigorous training under the Gold Saint Libra Dohko. There, he befriended Dohko's ward, Shunrei. Shiryu claimed the Dragon Bronze Cloth by mastering his Cosmo to a remarkable degree, reversing a waterfall's flow. This Cloth, hardened for centuries under a mineral-rich cascade, boasted legendary defenses, featuring an iconic shield and a gauntlet hailed as "the strongest fist and shield." A distinct green and white dragon mark manifested on his back during surges of his Cosmo. This mark acted as a life indicator, fading as his life force waned and vanishing completely upon death. His core techniques, honed at Lushan, included the Rozan Shō Ryū Ha (Rising Dragon Force), noted for a millisecond vulnerability over the heart; the Rozan Ryū Hi Shō (Soaring Mountain Dragon); the suicidal Rozan Kō Ryū Ha (Enraged Dragon Force); and later, the Rozan Hyaku Ryū Ha (One Hundred Rising Dragons), which eliminated the heart weakness. During the Sanctuary arc, he inherited the Excalibur technique from Capricorn Shura, enabling him to focus Cosmo into a blade-sharp edge from his right arm. Participating in the Galaxian Wars tournament in Japan, Shiryu's first match against Pegasus Seiya nearly ended in mutual annihilation. Seiya revived him by restarting his heart after the dragon mark faded. When Phoenix Ikki stole the Gold Cloth, Shiryu demonstrated profound self-sacrifice, offering his own blood to repair the damaged Pegasus and Dragon Cloths at the Cemetery of Cloths, an act that nearly claimed his life. His commitment led him to blind himself to defeat Perseus Algol, nullifying the petrifying effect of Algol's shield. Though initially told his blindness was permanent, he regained his sight upon awakening his seventh sense during a battle against Cancer Deathmask. In the Poseidon arc, Shiryu confronted the Mariner General Chrysaor Krishna. Despite his Dragon Cloth temporarily achieving a golden sheen after anointment with Gold Saint blood, Krishna shattered his shield and severed his chakras. Guided by Shura's spirit, Shiryu wielded Excalibur to destroy Krishna's spear and scale, defeating him but losing his eyesight a second time. He later donned the Libra Gold Cloth to help destroy one of Poseidon's underwater pillars. During the Hades Chapter - Sanctuary, Shiryu defied Athena's order to remain absent, driven by concern for Dohko and Shunrei. Despite blindness, he defeated resurrected Silver Saints, including Algol. He engaged Phoenix Ikki fiercely, disregarding warnings due to unwavering resolve. Reaching Dohko, he insisted on battling the traitorous Gold Saints, learning the Rozan Hyaku Ryū Ha despite his blindness. He later intervened with other Bronze Saints to halt the Athena Exclamation clashes. A deeply emotional moment occurred at Hades' castle when he encountered the resurrected Shura, who sacrificed himself to protect Shiryu from a lethal attack. Descending into the Underworld during the Inferno chapter, Shiryu awakened his eighth sense, retaining his physical form. Paired with Cygnus Hyoga, he explained adapting to sensory loss by recalling past blindness. He volunteered to stay behind, holding off pursuing Specters and successfully executing the Rozan Hyaku Ryū Ha against three foes simultaneously to ensure his comrades' escape. In Elysion, his Dragon Cloth transformed into a God Cloth after anointment with Athena's blood. He participated in the final battle against Hades, displaying calm focus. Following the Holy War against Hades, Shiryu returned to Lushan, married Shunrei, and adopted a son named Shoryu. He later fathered a biological son, Ryūhō. In the spin-off *Saint Seiya Omega*, an unspecified accident deprived him of all five senses, leading him to pass the Dragon Cloth to Ryūhō. After the God of Darkness Abzu's defeat restored his senses, he insisted Ryūhō continue as the Dragon Saint. During the war against the Pallasites, he fought wearing the Libra Gold Cloth inherited from Dohko. In the official manga sequel *Saint Seiya: Next Dimension*, Shiryu traveled back in time to the 18th century Holy War alongside Hyoga. He was formally acknowledged by the young Libra Dohko of that era as his successor and the future Gold Saint of Libra.
