Description
Shiryu, the Bronze Saint representing the Dragon constellation, underwent six years of rigorous training at China's Five Old Peaks of Lushan under Gold Saint Libra Dohko. His Dragon Cloth featured exceptional defensive properties, including a shield strengthened for centuries under Lushan's mineral-rich waterfall and recognized among the strongest for Bronze Saints. When his Cosmo surged, a dragon tattoo emerged on his back, functioning as a life gauge that faded as he approached death. His signature Rozan Shō Ryū Ha technique carried a momentary vulnerability over his heart upon execution.
At the Galaxian Wars tournament, Shiryu battled Pegasus Seiya. After Seiya exploited his technique's weakness to stop his heart, Seiya revived him by striking his back, cementing their enduring bond. Shiryu later journeyed to Jamir, sacrificing his blood to restore both the Pegasus and Dragon Cloths. This sacrifice weakened him during the Black Saints conflict, where he discarded his Cloth to defeat the Black Dragon Saint with Rozan Shō Ryū Ha. He nearly perished from blood loss until his opponent intervened.
Facing Perseus Algol in the Silver Saints arc, Shiryu blinded himself to neutralize a petrifying shield, securing victory but losing his sight. Initially deemed permanent, his vision returned after awakening his seventh sense during a clash with Cancer Deathmask, whom Shiryu confronted to protect Dohko. Shiryu demonstrated fierce loyalty when Deathmask threatened Shunrei, a girl he deeply cherished.
During the Poseidon arc, Shiryu fought Marine General Chrysaor Krishna. His Cloth briefly turned gold as he maximized his Cosmo, but Krishna's assault cost him his vision again. Guided by Capricorn Shura's spirit, Shiryu manifested the Excalibur technique, shattering Krishna's spear and defeating him by severing chakra points. He then destroyed Krishna's oceanic pillar and assisted in sealing Poseidon.
In the Hades arc, Shiryu awakened his eighth sense to enter the Underworld alive. Defying Athena's orders, he infiltrated the Sanctuary to shield Dohko, battling resurrected foes like Perseus Algol while blind. He witnessed Dohko's fight against Aries Shion and mastered Rozan Hyaku Ryū Ha despite his blindness. Descending into Inferno with Cygnus Hyōga, Shiryu deduced specters required divine blood to survive the void, enabling Hyōga's triumph. He then held off Specters Gordon, Queen, and Sylph single-handedly using Rozan Hyaku Ryū Ha, sacrificing himself so others could reach Elysion.
Reuniting with fellow Bronze Saints in Elysion, Shiryu received Athena's blood blessing, transforming his Cloth into a God Cloth. He joined the battle against twin gods Hypnos and Thanatos. Initially overpowered, the God Cloth empowered him to fight alongside his comrades. He witnessed Hades mortally wound Seiya before Athena defeated Hades.
Post-conflict, Shiryu returned to Lushan, married Chunli, and fathered Ryūhō. In *Saint Seiya Omega*, an unspecified accident deprived him of all five senses, prompting him to pass the Dragon Cloth to Ryūhō. After the God of Darkness Abzu's defeat restored his senses, Shiryu insisted Ryūhō remain Dragon Saint. Shiryu later wore the inherited Libra Gold Cloth to combat the Pallasites. *Saint Seiya: Next Dimension* depicted Shiryu adopting Shoryu and traveling to the 18th-century Holy War, where that era's Libra Dohko declared him the future Libra Gold Saint.
