Description
Ribon-chan, known as Bijou in some regions, is a female hamster with white fur. She consistently wears blue ribbons to secure her pigtails. Her personality blends elegance and unworldliness with a readiness to help friends, even when it involves getting dirty. Originally from France, she moved to Japan and joined the Ham-Ham community.
Early manga, specifically *Tottoko Hamutaro: Hamuchanzu de Gozaimachu! Vol.1*, depicted her as Penelope's older sister with an interest in knitting sweaters for fellow hamsters. This knitting trait did not continue into the anime series, where Barrette assumed the role.
Ribon-chan harbors a significant, unreciprocated crush on Hamtaro. She remains unaware of Boss's affections, viewing him more like a brother. Her feelings for Hamtaro sometimes lead to jealousy, particularly involving other female hamsters like Sparkle, Oshare, and Lapis. After Lapis kissed Hamtaro on the cheek, Ribon-chan temporarily saw Lapis as a rival before they reconciled and became friends.
In *Ham Ham Grand Prix Aurora Tani no Kiseki - Ribon-chan Kiki Ippatsu!*, Ribon-chan is central to the plot. Hamsters from Aurora Village believe she is their "Snow White Princess" who can restore snow to their warming valley. The snow fairy hamster Crystal is sent to retrieve her, but pirate hamsters led by Captain Hamstern capture Ribon-chan to prevent her from praying for snow's return. During captivity, she stays calm and prepares food for the pirates. Her capture motivates Hamtaro to compete in the Grand Prix to secure her freedom.
Her Japanese speech includes ending sentences with "dechuwa", while English localizations give her a French accent. Merchandise and spin-off media like *Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Heartbreak* and a LINE sticker sometimes show her in romantic contexts with Hamtaro, though their relationship stays platonic in the main anime series.
Ribon-chan maintains close friendships with female Ham-Hams Pashmina, Penelope, and Sandy, often seen alongside them. Her generosity and loyalty are consistent, whether comforting friends or joining group adventures.
