Description
Noppo-kun, called Maxwell in English, is an intelligent, book-smart hamster living with a bookstore-owning family. He is primarily cared for by the daughter, Yume, though earlier English sources name the family's eldest son as his owner. Physically distinct among the Ham-Hams, he has a taller, thinner build and notably longer ears, making him the group's second-tallest member after Boss.
Maxwell constantly carries a book and serves as the Ham-Hams' primary source of information, drawing from extensive reading. His expertise covers advanced subjects like science and literature. However, he often faces disappointment when trying to teach the others, as they struggle to pay attention during his lectures. Despite his intellectual confidence, he feels pressure when expected to solve every problem, a challenge seen in episodes like "Maxwell's Big Scoop!".
His most significant relationship is with Sandy, the sporty hamster. Sandy first reveals her crush on Maxwell in "Let's Dance, Sandy!", asking Hamtaro to relay her feelings. Maxwell reciprocates these feelings, hinting at his affection. Their relationship becomes official in "A Little Love Story!", where Maxwell reads a lovers' story and Sandy explicitly expresses her emotions. This bond deepens in later episodes such as "The Ham-Ham Explorers and the Romance Story!" and "It's Art, Sandy!".
Within the Ham-Ham Clubhouse, Maxwell holds multiple roles: teacher ("Much Ado About School!"), newspaper editor ("Maxwell's Big Scoop!"), and temporary leader (from "I'm Parting, Clubhouse!" to "Here I Am, Clubhouse!"). This versatility underscores his reliability. An early OVA, "Tottoko Hamutaro: Anime Dechu!", depicts him with design differences, wearing a blue full-body jumpsuit instead of his usual attire. The 2011 re-airing "Tottoko Hamutaro Dechu" includes episodes featuring Maxwell like "Let's Dance, Sandy!" and "Much Ado About School!", but adds no new character development.
His Japanese name, "Noppo-kun", translates to "tall and lanky", directly referencing his physique. The English name "Maxwell" may derive from physicist James Clerk Maxwell. Trivia notes include his use of various books, his fur pattern being similar to Snoozer's (differing only near the tail), and his record for holding the most jobs within the Clubhouse.
