Description
Kurama Wataribe begins as a villager cursed by Doakudar's magic into a birdman form, forced to spy on Wataru Ikusabe's group under threat to himself and his fellow villagers. This coercion drives his initial loyalty to Doakudar, casting him as an early antagonist.
Physically, he appears as a humanoid bird with tannish-brown feathers on his head and back, beige feathers on his front, an elongated beak, winged arms, thrush tail feathers, and three-clawed talon feet. His attire features a fur-trimmed red vest, a gold belt, and blue overalls covering his talons, along with a katana. A green left eye is visible; his right eye wears an eyepatch, later revealed to conceal a zit, not an injury.
His personality evolves across the series. Initially obsequious and deceitful toward Doakudar, he exhibits cynicism and reluctance to trust. Exposure to Wataru's group, particularly the genki kunoichi Himiko Shinobibe acting as a moral influence, triggers a change of heart. He gradually shifts from sabotage to genuine loyalty, becoming a trusted companion dedicated to the mission. This redemption culminates in active battle participation against Soukaizan's rulers, where he uses strategic thinking to aid the team despite lingering guilt over his past.
Kurama's role extends into sequels and spin-offs. In *Mashin Hero Wataru 2*, he assists in liberating Seikaizan, showing enduring loyalty and mentoring newer characters like Umihiko. He appears in *Super Mashin Hero Wataru*, where his experience and tactical acumen continue to benefit the team. While specific OVA appearances lack detailed documentation, his character consistently embodies themes of redemption and the tension between self-preservation and communal responsibility.
Pivotal relationships shape his development: his bond with Himiko softens his cynicism, while interactions with Wataru and the swordsman Shibaraku Tsurugibe foster mutual respect. These dynamics reinforce his transition from a self-serving spy to a selfless protector of Soukaizan's inhabitants.
