Description
Wataribe Kurama begins as an antagonistic infiltrator within Wataru Ikusabe’s group, dispatched by the demonic ruler Doakudar. To ensure Kurama’s obedience, Doakudar transformed him and his villagers into avian-human hybrids, leveraging their cursed forms as collateral. Kurama’s early deceit includes deliberately misdirecting Wataru’s allies and aiding adversaries such as Mariannette and Souye Souye to hinder the protagonists’ mission.
His avian features blend humanoid and bird traits: tannish-brown head and back feathers contrast with a beige front, a sharp beak, winged arms, thrush-like tail feathers, and three-clawed talons. Kurama dons a fur-lined red vest over a gold belt, blue overalls obscuring his talons, and wields a katana. A green left eye remains visible; his right hides beneath an eyepatch concealing a comedic zit.
Driven by desperation to free his village, Kurama’s allegiance wavers as he observes Wataru’s resolve. Reluctant cooperation evolves into pivotal support, including divulging enemy strategies when pressured. Bonds with allies like Himiko Shinobibe further catalyze his shift from coercion to genuine camaraderie.
Expanded portrayals retain Kurama’s cunning adaptability and backstory as a manipulated foe turned uneasy ally. His design occasionally influences unrelated characters in other media, while his concealed zit subtly reinforces the narrative’s tonal balance between levity and personal idiosyncrasy.
