Wataribe Kurama is a humanoid bird. His tannish-brown head and back feathers taper to beige on the front. He possesses an elongated beak, winged arms, thrush tail feathers, and three-clawed talon feet. His left eye is green and visible; his right eye is covered by an eyepatch due to a zit beneath it. Kurama wears a fur-trimmed red vest, a gold belt, blue overalls covering his talons, and consistently carries a katana.

Originally from an unspecified village, Kurama and his fellow villagers were transformed into birdmen by the evil magic of Doakudar. This curse forced Kurama to serve Doakudar as a spy within Wataru's party, motivated by the promise of reversing the transformation for himself and his villagers. During this time, he displayed obsequious behavior towards Doakudar while secretly gathering intelligence.

Kurama's role shifted significantly. Initially an adversary, he experienced a change of heart after interacting with Wataru and his companions, witnessing their genuine bonds and determination. Following his redemption, he transitioned into one of Wataru Ikusabe's trusted allies, actively aiding the quest to save Soukaizan. His interactions, particularly with Himiko Shinobibe who served as a significant positive influence, solidified his integration into the group and commitment to their cause.

His journey reflects themes of redemption and loyalty forged under duress.
