TV Special
Description
Shunsaku Ban, famously nicknamed Higeoyaji ("Old Man Mustache"), is a recurring figure across multiple works by Osamu Tezuka. He possesses a short, portly stature, a balding head, and a prominent white mustache that inspired his moniker. His typical attire features business casual clothing, including sport coats and ties.

The character debuted in the unpublished 1945 manga *Ghost Men*. His visual design originated from a caricature drawn by Tezuka's high school classmate, portraying the classmate's grandfather. Tezuka adapted this drawing into a character at age 16.

Loud, opinionated, and fiercely devoted to justice, Shunsaku Ban exhibits a short temper, a tendency to overreact, and a habit of jumping to conclusions. Despite these flaws, he remains fundamentally good-natured and courageous, frequently intervening physically to protect others. His perspective on robots varies: while he typically champions robot rights (such as welcoming Astro Boy into his classroom), some narratives portray initial distrust that evolves into acceptance following positive robot encounters.

Professionally, he most often appears as a private detective or a schoolteacher. Within the Astro Boy franchise, he frequently serves as Astro Boy's homeroom teacher while simultaneously undertaking detective work, often investigating cases in Metro City, sometimes alongside Astro Boy. He maintains a longstanding rivalry with Skunk Kusai.

In the special *Tezuka Osamu ga Kieta?! 20 Seiki Saigo no Kaijiken*, Shunsaku Ban attends a New Year's Eve party with Tezuka and other creations. When Tezuka vanishes under mysterious, kidnapping-like circumstances, Shunsaku Ban joins fellow characters in investigating and resolving the incident.

His familial relationships include a nephew, Kenichi, who often assists in detective work. The 2003 Astro Boy series identifies him as the uncle of Yuko Kisaragi. Alternate versions appear in other narratives: as a mustache-less teenager in *Atom: The Beginning*, displaying enthusiasm for robotics, and as a younger man with black hair and no mustache in the "Once Upon a Time" manga arc.

International adaptations assign him various names, including Mr. Mustachio, Albert Duncan, and Daddy Walrus, reflecting localized interpretations of his persona.
