Description
Ao Manaka met Mira Konohata on a childhood camping trip. Mira initially mistook her for a boy due to her short hair and gender-neutral name. During this encounter, Ao shared her deep knowledge of astronomy, revealing a variable star named after Mira but no celestial object bearing her own name. This led them to promise jointly to discover an asteroid and name it "Ao," establishing her lifelong dedication to astronomy.

She exhibits a reserved personality, speaking sparingly stemming from childhood embarrassment when classmates laughed at her verbal mistakes, making her more withdrawn. However, she communicates more openly with Mira than others. Despite her quiet nature, she displays strong emotions when her interests are challenged, such as reacting intensely to Mikage Sakurai's suggestion that Mira might switch from astronomy to geology. Her calm and intelligent demeanor contrasts with Mira's energetic personality, embodying a "Blue Is Calm" motif reflected in her blue-violet hair, cyan eyes, and name meaning "blue."

Visually, she has long violet hair typically in low twin tails and stands 158 cm tall. She keeps a whale mascot charm on her bag as a memento of Mira, referencing their shared memory of the constellation Cetus. After entering high school, she joined the Earth Sciences Club to pursue astronomy, reuniting with Mira and renewing their asteroid discovery pact. She serves as the club's treasurer in her second year.

Her relationship with Mira remains central. She moves into the Konohata household after her parents relocate, enabling her to continue at the same school and strengthening their daily collaboration towards their shared goal. Throughout their activities, she shows specific reactions only toward Mira, like blushing and retreating when Mira approaches closely, but not displaying similar responses to others such as Mira's sister Misa. She undertakes significant independent action during the "Kiraboshi Challenge," traveling alone to Ishigaki Island to join an astronomy camp, where her determination impressed professionals despite her typically shy nature.

She demonstrates gradual development from a shy introvert to someone more willing to take initiative while retaining her core thoughtful personality. This evolution is acknowledged by a real-world astronomical honor in 2024 when asteroid (697402) 2017 BX232 was named "Ao," referencing her character and the series' inspirational impact on citizen science initiatives.
