Duo Maxwell, an orphan from Colony L2-V08744 in the After Colony era, survived his early years in a street gang of parentless children. After their leader Solo succumbed to illness, he adopted the name "Duo" to honor their bond. Father Maxwell and Sister Helen of the Maxwell Church later took him in as their adoptive son. Sister Helen gave him his signature thigh-length braid. During this time, Duo rejected traditional faith, declaring belief only in the "God of Death" after repeated exposure to loss. In AC 188, anti-Alliance rebels sheltered in the church; Duo struck a deal to steal a mobile suit for them in exchange for the church's safety. Returning, he found the church destroyed in the "Maxwell Church Massacre," which killed 245 people, including Father Maxwell. Sister Helen died in his arms. He then took the surname Maxwell to honor them. In AC 192, Duo stowed away on a spaceship owned by Professor G and the salvager collective, the Sweeper Group. Discovered, he impressed Professor G by bypassing security systems and joined the group. Trained as a mobile suit pilot, he was assigned the XXXG-01D Gundam Deathscythe. Initially opposed to Operation Meteor's destructive goals, he attempted to destroy Deathscythe. Professor G convinced him to steal it instead, sending him to Earth to fight OZ. Physically, Duo stands 156 cm tall with a lean build, brown hair, cobalt-blue eyes, and his iconic braid. His typical attire includes dark jodhpurs and a cassock-style shirt over a white turtleneck, resembling clerical garb. Later, he wears practical outfits like a red-zippered turtleneck and leather jacket. Personality-wise, Duo presents as cheerful, talkative, and humorous, often using jokes to diffuse tension. This masks deeper complexities: he avoids lasting bonds due to childhood trauma and fears endangering others. He refers to himself as "Shinigami" (God of Death), viewing it as a necessary identity to protect the colonies and later Earth. Despite his sociable exterior, he frequently distances himself from groups, declining alliances like White Fang. His interactions with fellow Gundam pilots remain cooperative but reserved, particularly around Quatre Raberba Winner due to contrasting backgrounds. Duo excels in stealth tactics, evasion, and mobile suit piloting, leveraging Deathscythe's cloaking technology for hit-and-run operations. He demonstrates proficiency in firearms, hacking, communications, and mechanical engineering from his Sweeper Group training. He notably avoids using the Wing Zero's ZERO System. His piloting skills are exceptional, with Heero Yuy implying Duo surpasses him during a shuttle mission in Endless Waltz. Outside combat, he is resourceful with technology, using gadgets like beam-propeller gliders and fixing machinery. During Operation Meteor, Duo destroyed an OZ mobile suit factory and salvaged Heero's Wing Gundam. He freed Heero from an Alliance hospital and participated in the attack on New Edwards Base. After Trowa Barton destroyed Deathscythe, Duo escaped captivity with the upgraded XXXG-01D2 Gundam Deathscythe Hell. He later collaborated with former OZ volunteer Hilde Schbeiker, staging guerrilla attacks from a colony. Their relationship remains ambiguous, though he encouraged her to leave the war. In the Eve Wars, Duo helped rescue Trowa, Quatre, and Lucrezia Noin, later joining the battleship Peacemillion. He destroyed the Mercurius and Vayeate mobile dolls to save Hilde and aided in preventing the Libra colony drop. Post-conflict, he assisted Quatre in disposing of four Gundams in the sun. During the Mariemaia rebellion (Endless Waltz), he supported Heero in rescuing Relena Darlian, infiltrated Colony X-18999, and helped avert its collision with Earth. In the novel Frozen Teardrop, Duo has a son also named Duo Maxwell, born around MC 0013. The son pilots the Warlock mobile suit during Operation Mythos on Mars. Though parentage is not explicitly confirmed, circumstantial evidence links him to Duo and Hilde Schbeiker. The younger Duo displays abrasive arrogance but fights using his father's stealth techniques. His strained relationship with Duo stems from being raised solely by his father after his mother's death. Throughout his life, Duo carries mementos symbolizing loss: his braid honors Sister Helen, and his clothing reflects Father Maxwell's influence. His development involves reconciling his "God of Death" persona with a commitment to protecting others, evolving from a colony-focused revolutionary to a guardian of Earth Sphere civilians.
