TV Special
Description
May, daughter of Petalburg Gym Leader Norman and Caroline, is a Pokémon Coordinator from Petalburg City in Hoenn. She has a younger brother named Max. An initial fear of Pokémon stemming from a childhood misunderstanding with Tentacool evolved into deep affection during her journey. Her first partner, a Torchic from Professor Birch, evolved into Combusken.
Traveling with Ash and Brock, accompanied by Max, Ash initially mentored her due to her lack of Pokémon knowledge. Witnessing a Pokémon Contest ignited her passion for them. She developed a distinctive battling style featuring creative attack combinations, like mixing Combusken's Fire Spin with Squirtle's Bubble to create "Fire and Water Whirlwind". Holding Contest Passes for Hoenn, Kanto, and Johto, she aims to become a Top Coordinator. Her rivals include Drew, who initially criticized her lack of style but later acknowledged her growth, and Harley, who used underhanded tactics.
During events at Dr. Yung's laboratory, May assisted in countering the Mirage Master. Remaining outside the castle with Max initially, she intervened after an explosion signaled trouble. Using Squirtle, she swam in and rescued Misty from falling off a platform. She later battled the Mirage Master's forces, sending out Combusken and Gyarados alongside Misty's Pokémon. Her strategic use of Squirtle's water abilities for rescue and Combusken's combat skills demonstrated her coordination expertise in crisis.
May cares deeply for Max, often arguing but always prioritizing his safety. She once nearly missed a Grand Festival qualification searching for him when he went missing. Food-related incidents provoke strong reactions, like anger when her meals are stolen. She enjoys shopping, fashion, and creating Pokéblocks, though experimental recipes like "May's Purple Surprise" had limited appeal.
Her return sees her participating in the Wallace Cup wearing her Emerald game outfit. She revealed new Pokémon evolutions, like an Eevee evolving into Glaceon, and discussed her Johto Contest successes. During the Wallace Cup finals, she lost to Dawn but demonstrated refined battle strategies developed independently from Ash's influence. She later appeared supporting Ash during the Masters Eight Tournament.
May demonstrates optimism, resilience, and a commitment to developing her own identity as a Coordinator.
