Description
Rem Ayanokōji appears as a junior high school girl, her precise age and family origins undefined. She hails from a lineage of "Dream Guardians," inheriting psychic powers that allow her to enter the dreams of sleepers. Within these dreams, she confronts demons that craft nightmares and drain human life force, operating as a "dream hunter." Her investigations center solely on supernatural phenomena.

She operates the Ayanokōji Detective Agency from a Tokyo Aoyama side street. This private practice relies exclusively on client referrals, serving those troubled by bizarre or otherworldly incidents. Her professional scope extends beyond dream hunting to encompass real-world detective work involving the supernatural.

Her companions include two transforming pets: Alpha, a kitten shifting into a large wild cat for combat assistance, and Beta, a puppy capable of tracking spirits that transforms into a large wild dog. Key allies are Enkō, an ascetic monk providing support outside dreams through martial arts and spiritual powers fueled by strong faith, and Umimaru Kidō, a psychology professor and computer expert. Both Enkō and Kidō harbor romantic feelings for Rem, resulting in frequent rivalry. Tokyo police Inspector Junichirō Sakaki, who encountered her during a nightmare case involving his daughter, regularly consults her on supernatural investigations despite his own doubts about competence.

Her principal adversary is Dr. Shinigami, also known as Mephisto or Shimura, who shares her Dream Guardian heritage but exploits his abilities to murder people within their dreams. This conflict spans multiple documented incidents.

Her dream hunting entails navigating surreal, often perilous dreamscapes to battle nightmare entities. She consistently employs a Colt Python revolver loaded with silver bullets during these operations. Her character features distinct outfits: standard civilian attire, battle gear, a school uniform, athletic wear including a leotard with green tights, and tennis attire.

Her documented history encompasses numerous OVAs released between 1985 and 1992, including the original series and later installments like "New Dream Hunter Rem: The Knights Around Her Bed." She also appears in novels, manga series such as "Dream Hunter Rem XX" and "Dream Hunter Rem Alternative," anthology comics, and as a playable character in the simulation RPG "Super Heroine Chronicle."
