TV-Series
Description
Kazuo Ushiyama is a supporting character in the anime GaoGaiGar: King of the Braves, serving as a maintenance operator for the Gutsy Geoid Guard, the organization later known as the Gutsy Galaxy Guard. At twenty-two years old during the television series, and twenty-four in the subsequent OVA Final, he holds a vital position within the organization's maintenance department, where his primary responsibilities involve the logistical coordination of missions, technical support, and the maintenance and adjustment of the group's various mechanized units. He is a young man of Japanese descent with black hair and a blood type of O.
Ushiyama is characterized by a gentle and calm personality. His demeanor is typically even-tempered, and he finds respite from the daily tensions of his work through his hobby of caring for plants, a pastime that brings him a peaceful and relaxed expression. He is a dependable and kind individual, yet he is not particularly inclined toward physical activity, which sometimes leads to him being swept up in the more physically demanding pace set by his superior, Geki Hyuuma.
Motivated by a strong sense of duty and technical expertise, Ushiyama's role is primarily that of a support specialist. However, he demonstrates considerable courage and adaptability when the situation demands direct action. In a critical battle against the Zonder known as EI-15, he was forced to step out of his usual operator role. Piloting the Drill Gao unit, he endured tremendous gravitational forces to manually execute the Final Fusion sequence for GaoGaiGar, proving his capability in a high-pressure combat scenario. On another occasion, he temporarily co-piloted GaoGaiGar itself alongside Reo Shishioh and Geki Hyuuma, showcasing his ability to function effectively on the front lines when necessary. His technical acumen also extends to the development and deployment of specialized equipment, such as the Dividing Driver, a tool designed to create a battle field that minimizes collateral damage.
Within the GGG, Ushiyama works closely with several key personnel. He is subordinate to the fiery Geki Hyuuma, who often advises him to stay physically fit. His interpersonal relationships develop over the course of the series; following the battle against the Zonder, he begins a romantic relationship with his fellow maintenance department member, Akiko Nakai. His family connections also ground his character in the wider world of the series. He is the eldest of four brothers, and his youngest brother, Sueo, is a classmate of the young boy Mamoru Amami. As a result, Kazuo occasionally worries about his brother when Sueo gets caught up in dangerous incidents, and he has even been known to inadvertently let minor GGG secrets slip to his siblings.
Ushiyama's development shows a transition from a purely logistical support role to a more versatile and combat-ready crew member. His willingness to pilot a machine directly and endure its physical toll demonstrates a quiet but unyielding resolve. His notable abilities are not related to physical combat prowess, but rather to his encyclopedic knowledge of GGG's advanced machinery, his skills as a field operator and mechanic, and his reliable performance in crisis management. While he continues his operator duties, he also becomes more involved in field operations and equipment development, cementing his reputation as a capable and trusted member of the GGG team.
