Description
Atsuko Kagari, frequently called Akko-chan, is an elementary school girl who gains magical powers following a significant event with her favorite mirror. When this mirror, originally a gift from her mother (or sometimes her father from India), breaks, she buries it respectfully in her yard. This act attracts a spirit or the Queen of the Mirror Kingdom, who rewards her with a magical compact mirror. Using the incantations "tekumaku mayakon, tekumaku mayakon" and "lamipus lamipus lu lu lu lu lu," she can transform into anything she desires. She must keep the mirror's power a secret; later adaptations introduce the consequence that her reflection will disappear if the secret is exposed.

Physically, she is a tall, slender girl with a distinctive hairstyle featuring pigtails and a large, fluffy bouffant-like swell at the crown of her head, often accessorized with a headband and ribbons. Her hair, when down, is straight and waist-length in anime adaptations. Her attire varies: the original manga shows various dresses or separates, while anime versions standardized outfits—a white blouse, red vest, and red skirt in 1969; a red "A" jacket and yellow skirt in 1988; and a pink skirt in 1998. Her hair color shifts between adaptations, from medium brown to deep purple.

Her personality is cheerful, friendly, mischievous, and strong-willed. Early narratives highlight her innocence and occasional impulsiveness, like seeking revenge against a bully who broke her original mirror. The magic allows her to help others, play pranks, or satisfy curiosity—such as transforming into a doll for a smaller perspective. However, her use of magic isn't always careful, leading to situations where she loses or nearly exposes the mirror, requiring intervention from the spirit or "Man from the Mirror Country" to retrieve it. Adaptations adjusted her traits over time: the 1969 anime emphasizes moral dilemmas, while the Nakayoshi manga revival shows her using magic more casually or chaotically, sometimes with unintended consequences.

Key relationships define her experiences. She shares a close bond with her mother, though interactions sometimes risk exposing her secret. Her father's presence varies—absent in the original manga but depicted as a ship captain in early anime or a newscaster in later stories. Her best friend, Moko, is a constant companion, with minor conflicts arising. Rivalries include Taisho, a neighborhood bully with a secret crush on her, whose interactions drive comedic or conflict plots. Others include Kankichi, whom she treats like a younger brother; Chikako, a friend prone to spying; and Ganmo, who occasionally causes trouble. Figures like her homeroom teacher Sato-sensei and English teacher Moriyama-sensei populate her school life; Akko sometimes transforms into the latter for fun or problem-solving, causing confusion.

Her character design shares similarities with Totoko from Osomatsu-kun due to Fujio Akatsuka's "Star System" reuse, though Akatsuka later clarified they are distinct characters. Artwork differences, such as rounder eyes or farther-apart eye highlights, are noted but inconsistently applied.
