Description
Motoko Minagawa is a third-year student at Kaibara Municipal High School. Her family runs a vegetable shop on the town's busy side, with their apartment above the store; she does not assist in the business. Living with her single mother, Motoko experiences a strained relationship marked by frequent arguments. She places blame on her mother for her father's absence, having no knowledge of him or any photographs. Prior to transferring to Kaibara, Motoko attended a large private school where her loud behavior and short temper resulted in social isolation. She founded the Prince Yuki Fan Club partly to find companionship among girls who shared her admiration for Yuki Sohma, though she privately considers the other members untrustworthy and views herself as the most cruel and hated among them.
Motoko possesses long, deep indigo blue hair in the manga and 2019 anime, depicted as light brown in the 2001 anime; it typically falls to her waist and is regularly adorned with decorative bows. She is rarely seen outside her school uniform.
As president of the Prince Yuki Fan Club, Motoko displays obsessive devotion towards Yuki Sohma, frequently writing poetry about him. She perceives any girl near Yuki as a threat, labeling Tohru Honda a "witch," Arisa Uotani a "Yankee," and Saki Hanajima a "demon." Despite her assertiveness within the club, she becomes extremely nervous and stammers during direct interactions with Yuki, once only managing to ask about his breakfast despite intending to confess. She speaks using a distinctive, overly polite form of Japanese.
Motoko orchestrated a plan with Minami Kinoshita and Mio Yamagishi to follow Saki Hanajima home, aiming to find weaknesses against Tohru and Saki. During the visit, Saki warned them against speaking their real names inside the house. When Saki left to prepare tea, the trio searched her room; Motoko opened a sliding door and screamed upon encountering Saki's brother, Megumi Hanajima. Megumi revealed his ability to curse people through their names, having already learned theirs. He confronted them about disrespecting Yuki through their actions, causing the group to flee.
At the school graduation ceremony, Motoko confessed her feelings to Yuki. Visibly anxious, she stated she would not give up hope "as long as it exists" and walked away without looking back. She later acknowledged Tohru's positive influence on Yuki, recognizing Tohru helped him smile genuinely. Motoko conceded that if any girl deserved Yuki's affection, it would be Tohru.
In *Fruits Basket Another*, Motoko is married with a daughter, Ruriko Kageyama. Ruriko becomes president of the Sohma Fan Club, mirroring her mother's former role. When Ruriko spent an entire summer vacation studying the Sohma family, Motoko expressed understanding of her devotion but advised moderating her enthusiasm.
