Description
Mai Kazuki is an eleven-year-old girl who comes from a family deeply involved in stage magic. Her grandparents lead a professional magic troupe called Magic Carat, a group in which her mother was once a performer. Growing up immersed in this world, Mai developed a strong passion for magic and dreams of becoming a great stage magician, inspired by her idol, the legendary magician Emily Howell. Despite her enthusiasm and determination, Mai is naturally clumsy and accident-prone, which makes her inept at performing traditional stage tricks. This contrast between her high hopes and her lack of natural talent is a defining part of her daily life.

Mai’s life changes when she encounters a strange, floating light that leads her to a talking mirror fairy named Topo, who takes up residence in her stuffed flying squirrel doll. Topo gives her a magical bracelet adorned with the symbols of the four card suits. Using this bracelet, Mai can summon a magic wand and transform into Magical Emi, a confident and graceful teenage magician who appears to be around sixteen to eighteen years old. In this transformed state, her clumsiness vanishes, and she gains access to real magical powers, allowing her to perform stunning stage illusions and use magic to solve practical problems. As Magical Emi, she becomes the star performer of Magic Carat, drawing large audiences and even television attention, all while keeping her true identity a secret from her family, friends, and fellow troupe members.

In her everyday life as Mai, she is a lively, high-spirited, and energetic girl with a strong sense of justice and kindness. She can also have a quick temper, often becoming frustrated when teased about her clumsiness or dismissed because of her age. She shares a playful, sibling-like relationship with Sho Yuki, a seventeen-year-old magician in the troupe, which is marked by bickering and mutual support. She is a caring older sister to her younger brother Misaki, who sometimes demonstrates more natural talent for magic than she does, and she remains oblivious to the romantic feelings of her classmate Musashi. While Mai generally tries to be helpful and friendly, she is not a good cook and struggles with tasks that require precision, often leading to comedic mishaps.

Mai’s core motivation is to become a skilled magician through her own genuine ability. This desire creates her primary internal conflict, as the success she achieves as Magical Emi feels hollow because it is the result of enchantment rather than personal effort and practice. Throughout her story, she wrestles with the temptation to rely on her magical powers versus the need to earn recognition through hard work and perseverance. Her character development culminates in her decision to renounce her magical bracelet and powers, choosing instead to pursue her dream of becoming a master magician through dedication and self-reliance. This choice represents her maturation and her commitment to authenticity, as she aims to honor her idol Emily Howell by developing genuine skill rather than taking supernatural shortcuts.

In the crossover OVA Majokko Club Yoningumi - A Kūkan Kara no Alien X, Magical Emi appears alongside three other magical girls to face an alien threat. In this story, she uses her magic to help battle a monster that rapidly ages young women, a mission that requires the team to travel into space. Her role in this adventure demonstrates her place within a broader magical universe, where she deploys her abilities in cooperation with other heroines to confront a powerful enemy.
