Description
Hata-bou, also called Hatabō or Mr. Flag, began as a supporting character in the manga *Osomatsu-kun* by Fujio Akatsuka and Kenichiro Takai. Readers chose his name, meaning "flag boy," via a *Shōnen Sunday* column.

Physically, he is a young boy marked by a flag protruding from his head. Early depictions sometimes showed this flag emerging from his ears or held separately, but it became a permanent fixture. This flag usually displays Japan's Hinomaru, though it changes contextually—featuring a Communist flag in *Red Flag Sunday*, flags like the USA or UK internationally, or symbols like exclamation points and hearts reflecting his emotions. His design includes a shaggy, kappa-like bowlcut, vertical lines beneath his nose suggesting a runny nose, "cheek beard" mucus marks, and a single bucktooth. His attire varies: the original manga and Studio Zero versions show a simple one-button shirt and pants, while the 1988 Pierrot anime gives him green overalls with a baby chick pattern.

Personality-wise, Hata-bou is simple-minded and often oblivious to his surroundings. His naivety and lack of direction make him an easy target for bullies like the Matsuno sextuplets and Chibita. Despite this, he occasionally shows surprising strength, particularly in anti-hero or criminal roles. His intelligence shifts across adaptations: appearing sharper in the *Shōnen King* manga but reverting to a foolish, dry persona in the 1980s anime. His speech frequently ends with the tic "da jo" or "jo," and his early 1988 anime dialogue mainly consists of self-introductions.

His relationships emphasize his vulnerability and adaptability. Chibita frequently dominates him, though their dynamic fluctuates between friendship and rivalry. He assists the inventor Dekapan, sometimes depicted as Dekapan's son for narrative depth. Interactions with the sextuplets usually involve him being pranked or exploited.

In the spinoff *Osomatsu-san*, Hata-bou appears as an adult, retaining his childlike stature and mannerisms. Physically unchanged from adolescence, he wears green overalls over a light yellow hoodie. This adult persona alternates between a kind, simple-minded man and a briefly wealthy businessman known as "Mr. Flag," who loses his fortune due to financial incompetence, causing his employees to abandon him. Despite this setback, his core innocence persists. He rides a child's tricycle and displays persistent loneliness and a desire for friendship.

Hata-bou features extensively in Fujio Akatsuka's "Star System," appearing in works like *The Genius Bakabon*, *Extraordinary Ataro*, and the spinoff *Hatabō and Wanpei* (1971–1972). His animated roles include the 1966 and 1988 *Osomatsu-kun* series, *Furious Ataro*, *Heisei Genius Bakabon*, and *Osomatsu-san*, with episodic parts such as "The Great Detective! Hatabō-da jou!" in the 1988 anime. His broader media presence encompasses interactive materials and pachinko games, often emphasizing his "foolish" archetype.
