Description
Jiro is the central protagonist of the story, a teenager who discovers that his origins are not entirely human. His background is rooted in a supernatural event; as an infant, he was delivered to a human couple, Ryuichiro and Kyoko Shiba, by a powerful oni named Senki. Senki gave the child to the couple with a clear and ominous warning that he would return in fifteen years to reclaim him. The Shibas, who were without a child of their own, accepted the infant and raised him as their son, naming him Jiro Shutendo.

As a young man, Jiro is portrayed as a reserved and somewhat aloof individual. He is an average high school student on the surface, but he possesses an intense aura and is plagued by terrifying visions and nightmares of oni, which he initially dismisses as bad dreams. This internal turmoil causes him to be somewhat isolated; he attempts to keep others at a distance, particularly his classmate Miyuki Shiratori, whom he warns away because of the malevolent forces he feels surround him. His personality is sometimes described as understated, which is a contrast to the dramatic and violent events that unfold around him.

Jiros motivations are primarily driven by a desire to protect those he cares about from the threats that emerge because of his own identity. His quiet life is disrupted when he is targeted by a demon-worshipping cult known as the Ankoku Jashin Kyo and hostile oni who see him as a prophesied figure called Shuten Doji, a powerful force destined to oppose them. As the people close to him, especially Miyuki, are put in danger, Jiro is forced to confront his true nature and harness the growing power within himself to shield them. His role in the story is that of a reluctant hero whose personal journey unlocks the mysteries of his birth and the fate of the oni realm.

Key relationships are central to Jiros development. His bond with his adoptive parents, Ryuichiro and Kyoko, is one of deep affection and loyalty. They are not passive guardians; his father diligently researches oni lore to find ways to protect him, and their love ultimately provides him with a human anchor. His relationship with Miyuki Shiratori acts as a significant emotional catalyst. Despite his initial attempts to push her away, her unwavering feelings for him and her frequent capture by enemies force him to act and embrace his powers. Jiro is also guided and protected by two powerful oni: Goki, a guardian whose shadow occasionally manifests to protect Jiro from a young age, and Senki, the very oni who delivered him as a baby and returns to fulfill his promise. These oni serve as mentors and allies, ushering him into the conflict between the worlds of humans and demons.

Over the course of the narrative, Jiro undergoes significant development. He transitions from a confused and isolated teenager to a being who fully embraces his dual heritage as both human and oni. His journey is not a simple one; it forces him to travel through time and across dimensions, from a dystopian future to ancient Japan, to uncover the shocking truth of his origin. The discovery that his biological mother, driven mad by his abduction, is responsible for creating the oni realm out of her own suffering, places a heavy burden on him. The resolution of this paradox allows Jiro to achieve a reconciliation with his identity. He does not abandon his human side but rather integrates it, ultimately returning to a peaceful life with his adoptive parents and Miyuki after freeing his mother's soul and destroying the demonic dimension.

In terms of abilities, Jiro is far from an ordinary human. His oni heritage grants him latent supernatural powers that manifest as he reaches adolescence. He possesses superhuman strength and resilience, demonstrated in a childhood incident where he survived being hit by a truck without injury, though the vehicle was destroyed. He can project his energy, most notably forming blades of ki to use as weapons in combat, and his demonic nature is physically marked by the intermittent growth of horns on his head. His powers evolve as his understanding of his origin deepens, allowing him to battle both ancient oni and futuristic cyborgs across the fabric of time and space.
