Description
Jam Ojisan, known as Uncle Jam or Mr. Jam, creates Anpanman and lives in a bakery within the Anpanman World. He presents an elderly appearance with gray hair, fluffy eyebrows, a mustache, and lighter red-tinted cheeks and nose than Anpanman. He is always clad in a white chef's hat, shirt, pants, apron, and blueish-gray shoes.
Kindness, warmth, and a powerful drive to help others define his character. Vast journeys in his youth granted extensive knowledge, evidenced by the many books filling his bakery. Beyond baking, he exhibits exceptional mechanical skills, building mecha like the Anpanman Mobile and repairing robotic characters. He is also depicted as a competent motorcycle rider.
As creator and primary caregiver, he shares a father-son bond with Anpanman, having raised him since infancy and urging him toward justice. He created or is linked to other key characters: Currypanman (though this origin is sometimes inconsistent), Melonpanna, and Rollpanna. Despite Rollpanna's conflicting blue heart, he maintains a soft spot for her, repeatedly inviting her to join the bakery. He acts as a father figure to Melonpanna and fosters Creampanda, nurturing his abilities much like a young Anpanman.
His relationship with Batako is explicitly non-familial, yet they share a close, family-like bond through living together and deep mutual care. While their meeting lacks official explanation, one episode hints at a connection dating to Batako's infancy. His pet dog, Cheese, also resides at the bakery, though their bond receives less emphasis than his bond with Batako.
Within the Anpanman World, Jam Ojisan and Batako are identified as fairies, not humans, as humans do not exist. Early depictions in the original manga showed him smoking a pipe, discontinued in the anime and later media. His name was absent in the initial 1973 picture book, where he was simply called "uncle" or "old man."
His core function involves baking replacement heads for Anpanman when they become damaged, wet, or depleted from alleviating hunger. He similarly maintains or creates heads for other bread-based heroes. His bakery serves as a central hub for the heroes, and he provides broader support through inventions, wisdom, and unwavering encouragement for all creations to do good.
