Description
Hanpei Hattori is a private detective and a human ally to the main characters in the anime Guitar o Motta Shōnen - Kikaider vs. Inazuman. He claims to be a descendant of the legendary Iga ninja Hattori Hanzo, a piece of family history he often invokes to assert his detective prowess. His self-image as a great detective is undercut by his financial struggles; he is frequently out of money and takes on any case that comes his way. In his profession, he is accompanied by his assistant, Etsuko Sarutobi.

Characterized by a goofy and easily frightened nature, Hanpei serves as a source of comic relief and a recognizable human perspective amidst conflicts involving androids and robots. He has a strong chin, large eyes obscured by thick glasses, and long dark hair, often covered by a hat or headband, and typically wears a trench coat. Despite his nervous disposition, he possesses a core of loyalty and tenacity, pushing past his fears to follow through on his commitments, particularly to the Komyoji siblings, Mitsuko and Masaru. He tends to call Jiro, the android hero, mister Jiro.

In Guitar o Motta Shōnen - Kikaider vs. Inazuman, an OVA set after the events of Kikaider 01, Hanpei is once again hired for his tracking skills, this time to locate Jiro. His search leads him to mistake a high school student named Saburo Kazeda for his target. After correcting this error, he successfully reunites with Jiro. The reunion is short-lived, however, as Hanpei witnesses Jiro lose control due to an implanted submission chip, which triggers a confrontation between Jiro and Inazuman, Saburo's transformed state as a powerful electromagnetic human.

Hanpei's role in the story is primarily that of a supporter and a human anchor for the main plot. He holds his own against villains through wits and unexpected bravery rather than superhuman strength. He is known to employ occasional ninja-inspired techniques, such as the rope-escape art Nawanuke no Jutsu. He also claims to hold black belts in judo and karate, though he does not often demonstrate these skills in combat. His true value lies in his persistence and his investigative instincts, which make him capable of tracking individuals across significant distances and deducing their likely locations. While he is often a cowardly figure in the face of DARK's robotic agents, he consistently takes action to aid the Komyoji family, demonstrating a steadfast sense of justice that overrides his initial self-preservation instincts.
