Foo Fighters, often abbreviated as F.F., began as a colony of plankton near Green Dolphin Street Prison. Sentience and a distinct identity emerged when Enrico Pucci, using his Stand Whitesnake, implanted a Stand DISC into the colony. This transformed the plankton into a self-sustaining Stand-user hybrid, blurring the line between Stand and user. Initially serving Pucci obediently, Foo Fighters guarded stolen Stand DISCs hidden in a remote prison shack. It dispatched intruders without hesitation, defining its existence solely by fulfilling Pucci's commands and ensuring self-preservation.
Foo Fighters' physical form, composed entirely of plankton, was highly malleable. Outside a host, it typically manifested as a tall, dark, robotic humanoid with masculine proportions. Its most consistent and recognizable form was the inhabited corpse of Atroe, a deceased female inmate of average height and slim build, adopted after an initial defeat. This form displayed distinctive lime-green hair or a serrated-edge cap. Constantly requiring hydration to prevent disintegration, Foo Fighters frequently carried a 32 oz. cup of water. This dependence fueled an obsession with consuming any water-containing liquid, including blood or saliva.
Personality development defined Foo Fighters' journey. Initially possessing intellect but minimal life experience, it quoted astronomer Fred Hoyle to assert plankton intelligence and demanded recognition as a sentient being by name. Its purpose was narrow: obey Pucci and survive. A pivotal shift occurred during a confrontation with Jolyne Cujoh and Ermes Costello. Defeated and dehydrated, Jolyne spared its life by offering water. This act of mercy sparked profound curiosity and burgeoning individuality. Experiencing the world through Jolyne's compassion, Foo Fighters began noticing finer details, perceiving the environment as more vibrant, and actively experimenting with human behavior – even acting contrary to how Atroe might have behaved. Gratitude evolved into fierce loyalty, particularly towards Jolyne, who granted it freedom and intellect. Foo Fighters' greatest fear became losing this newfound consciousness. Positive memories with Jolyne and her allies fostered deep bonds, leading it to prioritize their safety over its own survival.
As a Stand, Foo Fighters' plankton nature granted unique abilities. It lacked conventional vital points, showing resilience to most physical attacks. Key powers included generating independent sub-bodies by splitting the colony for multi-front combat or stealth. Rapid regeneration was possible from a single surviving plankton, provided water was available for multiplication. Dehydration remained a critical weakness, causing rapid disintegration in dry conditions. Foo Fighters could invade and control corpses, accessing their memories and using their bodies as disguises, exemplified by the Atroe form. Within a host, it developed techniques like the "F.F. Shot," firing plankton bullets to invade or damage opponents internally, and the "Plankton Seal," using its biomass to plug wounds, heal injuries, and restore damaged organs. It also demonstrated minor water manipulation, such as forming a mirror from a small amount of water.
Foo Fighters' story arc involved significant battles and sacrifices. Allied with Jolyne, it participated in conflicts like the wager against Miraschon, aided Ermes Costello against Sports Maxx (briefly falling victim to his Stand, Limp Bizkit), and healed allies from severe injuries. It protected Jolyne from threats like Kenzo and Dragon's Dream. Pucci later tricked Foo Fighters into leading Jolyne's group into an ambush. During this confrontation, Pucci inflicted a massive injury, forcibly removing the Foo Fighters Stand DISC from its host body. Severely dehydrated and near death, Foo Fighters witnessed Narciso Anasui's willingness to sacrifice himself for Jolyne's happiness. In its final act, Foo Fighters refused to possess Anasui's body. Instead, it used its remaining plankton to seal Anasui's fatal wound, indirectly saving both Anasui and Jotaro Kujo. As its life faded, Foo Fighters' spirit momentarily appeared to Jolyne, expressing joy and fulfillment at the confirmation of its sentient life through this spiritual form before departing.
Foo Fighters also appeared in the mobile games *Monster Strike* as a non-playable boss character and *Puzzle & Dragons* as an obtainable unit.
